Learning to Spell

Traditional spelling instructions and weekly spelling tests have many advantages and disadvantages, but there is debate regarding whether they are truly beneficial to students. The advantages of traditional spelling instruction and weekly spelling tests include focusing the learning on spelling the correct word, rather than memorizing a set of words. Practice at reading improves accuracy in spelling, while spelling instructions improve fluency and comprehension in
reading. Additionally, spelling ability is a reliable indicator of a student's ability to read
(Llanes, 2018)
. While traditional spelling instructions and weekly spelling tests have many advantages, they also have some disadvantages. It has the disadvantage that students will memorize words for spelling tests and then forget them as they do not learn to recognize patterns in words or how to generalize those patterns to spell other words that are similar to those on the test. Additionally,
all spelling lists are the same for students of all levels, including emergent students, beginners, and English language learners, demonstrated that some students may find the words simple while
others may find them difficult due to the absence of differentiated spelling tests (Allison, 2019)

In preparation for this lesson, I am preparing it for a group of children between the ages
of 6 and 7. Within my classroom, I would include Letter Name-Alphabetic and Within-Word
Patterns as two of the most important spelling development stages. In Letter Name Alphabetic,
students are taught to represent phonemes in words using letters. They initially spell many words
in an abbreviated manner, but they eventually learn to spell them using consonant blends,
digraphs, and short vowel patterns. The concept of "Within-Word Patterns" refers to how
students learn long-vowel patterns, controlled vowels within a single word, and they reverse the
order of the letters in the word. An example is FORM from FROM (Tompkins, Rodgers, &
Rodgers, 2022)

On each of the three "study days" (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) there will be an activity planned for each day. To build and spell words on Tuesday, students will use letter beads and pipe-cleaners to slide the letter beads onto. By building the spelling word and then stringing it on the pipe-cleaner, this activity would help my students to develop fine motor skills. I would provide each student with their own bag and pipe-cleaner so they could take the words home with
them to practice.
On Wednesday, if the weather permits, I will take my students outside to spell with sidewalk chalk. Each student would receive a chalk and a space on the sidewalk. After I have said
a spelling word, I would instruct them to write the word in their space, in any size they deem
