INQR 101 I NQUIRY P ORTFOLIO P ROJECT : F INAL S UBMISSION T EMPLATE Name: Anna Reid Baer This course-long portfolio, developed over multiple weeks, will give you the opportunity to engage with a particular research topic while utilizing the various steps of the inquiry process. Once you have completed each week of the project, you will compile each step from Weeks 2-6 into this template and submit it in the link named “Inquiry Portfolio Project Final Submission”. Remember that you are compiling previous work here, and failure to complete each step may result in failure for the assignment. Week Two Topic Selection Original Submission : Learning Styles in Education Now that I know what I know, this is what I would change if I were to start creating my topic : I would narrow down this topic a little bit more and focus on a specific learning style or go into depth about how each learning style effects education. I would be more specific to tighten the parameters of research and to find more valuable sources. Week Three Development of Research Question Original Submission : What are the different learning styles in education and why is it important for teachers to strategically implement each type in everyday instruction in the classroom? Now that I know what I know, this is what I would change if I were to develop my research question : Same with my topic selection, I would narrow this down more tighten up the research parameters. I did eventually specify this question more to be more specific because I found it difficult to find sources with a broad subject. Now I know that specificity is key for research.
INQR 101 Research Log Template – Week 4 Take notes as you search to help you remember which databases, keywords, and strategies worked the best. Your log should show evidence of searching for various types of resources, including books and scholarly articles. Date Tool, Database, or Source Used (i.e., Academic Search Complete, ProQuest, JFL Catalog, etc.) Google is not acceptable, and be sure to vary your search methods. Search Strategy (keywords, terms, filters, etc.) Number of Results Notes about Results (think in terms of a search and source’s quality, relevance, and purpose – keep in mind that you must clearly identify 4 distinct sources (two books and two articles) that might be potential sources for your research and inquiry process) Write a clear entry, using academic voice and style, to describe your process and results. Be sure to review the assignment’s instructions for guidance. 11/8/22 JFL Catalog Keywords 1,064,689 For my first search, I went to the JFL catalog and typed in a general search (learning styles) and then narrowed my results down to specifically peer-reveiwed articles. Since this search was a starting point, the results were very broad, and they did not all directly relate to my question. 11/8/22 JFL Catalog Keywords 8,644 For my second search, I went to the JFL catalog and typed in the general search ( visual, auditory, kinesthetic, education) and narrowed my results to peer-reviewed articles. This search was still very broad; however, most results were peer-reviewed, used reliable sources, and covered a part of my research question regarding the learning styles. 11/8/22 JFL Catalog Filters 801 For my third search, I stayed on the previous search and used filters to narrow down my search. I filtered my results to have an education discipline, published in the last 5 years, and peer reviewed. My results were narrowed more towards my research question about learning styles, but the results were similar from the last search. 11/8/22 JFL Catalog Keywords & Filters 434 For my fourth search, I changed my keywords in my search to (kinesthetic, learning, student success, classroom ) and filtered my results to an education discipline and education and educational
INQR 101 research subject. I also filtered my results to be strictly peer-reviewed articles published in the last 5 years. In this search, my first result is an article relating directly to my research question about learning styles and strategically implementing them in the classroom. 11/8/22 ProQuest Keywords 22 For my fifth search, I went to ProQuest and narrowed my search to strictly peer-reviewed books and used keywords (teaching learning styles) for my search to focus more on the teaching of learning styles aspect instead of what they are. Unfortunately, there were not many results that related directly to my research question, but I found one specifically about teaching methods and pedagogical models. 11/8/22 ProQuest Keywords 10 For my sixth search, I went to ProQuest and narrowed my search to strictly peer-reviewed books and typed in the general search more specific keywords (learning styles, teaching, classroom, student) to narrow down my results to fit my specific question. One of my results is a handbook for teachers on pedagogical models in teaching and learning in education which directly fits into my research question. 11/8/22 ProQuest Filters 3 For my seventh search, I stayed on the previous search with keywords and added filters to narrow it down more. I filtered my results to have a cognitive style subject, peer reviewed, and published in the last 5 years. This narrowed my search to three sources that all directly relate to my research question about teaching different learning styles in education and a variety of strategies for teachers. 11/8/22 For my eighth search, my search was strictly narrowed down to peer- reviewed books, and I changed my keywords in my search

INQR 101 ProQuest Keywords & Filters 268 (kinesthetic, auditory, visual, classroom, student) and filtered my results to be peer-reviewed, published in the last 5 years, and have a subject of learning to narrow down the source results. The change in keywords have me a broader search result so some of them do not directly correlate with my question but I found some good results regarding learning styles in students. 11/8/22 ProQuest Keywords & Boolean Operators 359,628 For my ninth search, I limited my search to specifically peer- reviewed scholarly journals and used key word in my search ( learning styles, education) and use the Boolean Operator (AND) to narrow my search more. The results were still broad and brought back many sources, but I found a few sources that correlate with learning styles in the classroom. 11/8/22 ProQuest Keywords & Boolean Operators & Filters 9,761 For my tenth search, I stayed on the previous search with same keyword and Boolean operator but applied filters to narrow my search down more. I filtered my sources to be peer-reviewed and published in the last 5 years and with a subject of education. The results were not exactly aligned with my question but were focused on learning styles. Now that I know what I know, this is what I would change if I were to begin looking for sources : I would immediately start off using keywords with the exclusive Boolean operator, not. I found that when finding valuable sources, the not operator was very helpful and saved time. I also would begin using filters as well because these are very useful when narrowing down sources specific to a topic. Week Five Process Findings Original Submission : The two sources I chose are “Developing Kinesthetic Classrooms to Promote Active Learning” which is a scholarly journal article and
INQR 101 “Handbook of Research on Pedagogical Models for Next-Generation Teaching and Learning” which is a book. I chose these two sources out of the four I selected because they both directly connect with my research question and major in elementary education over the other two. These sources in particular focus on a variety of teaching methods of learning styles in the classroom and explain why it is beneficial to students. These sources were written to inform and teach teachers and educators how to modify teaching strategies to accommodate different learning styles and the benefits that come with a flexible style of teaching. The author of the handbook is Jared Keengwe, who is a professor at the University of North Dakota and a former coordinator of the Undergraduate Elementary Education program at the university. Out of all my sources, this author seemed to be the most credible and provide the most valuable information for my question. The author of the journal article is Brian Culp who is a scholar that focuses on equity in education and community by building intergenerational programming and infrastructures. This author has a title that topped the other authors in my four selected sources and this is important to verify his credibility. The audience of these sources seems to be current and future teachers and educators, which is the audience I also intend to reach. These articles are also relevant as they were published in 2018 and 2022, along with being accurate and trustworthy because they are peer-reviewed. The argument in both sources is geared towards the importance of the implementation of active teaching and learning by modifying teaching strategies. This is the same argument that I am answering in my research which is what connects my question to these sources and why these sources are important to me. These sources are significant to my academic career because I am in the process of studying elementary education to become a teacher. It is essential for me as a future teacher to understand the learning styles and how to teach in a flexible and strategic manner. Ultimately, I chose these academic sources for my argument because they have the strongest purpose for my question, credible authority, are most relevant, and are accurate. Now that I know what I know, this is what I would change if I were to begin critiquing my sources : I felt that I analyzed my sources very well and took all evaluation aspects into consideration. However, if I were to begin critiquing my sources I would consider if the sources were created by primary or secondary source. I now know this can actually be very useful when determining how credible a
INQR 101 source is. Week Six Statement of Intent Original Submission : The research I am doing is beneficial to my career because I am studying elementary education and plan to pursue a degree in teaching. It is very important to me that when I become a teacher, I am the teacher with whom every student feels successful and included. Teaching in a variety of ways and accommodating each learning style to include every student is a career goal of mine. This research is beneficial to Liberty University as it brings light to the different learning styles that should be implemented by professors in classes. It also educates other future teachers at Liberty on the importance of learning styles in education and how every student learns differently from auditory to visual to kinesthetic. This research can serve as an answer to conversations discussing how education is changing and how to modify instruction to benefit students. Communities are benefitted from this research because they are directly impacted by the issue because children in the community go to school. Education changing to fit in with social changes and modifying instruction to include every student’s learning need is beneficial to any community. This research connects to my personal history and background because growing up in public school, teaching methods seemed stagnant and constant. I now have a passion to create a more active and flexible classroom environment by teaching with each learning style. I have always wanted to be a teacher that stands out and whom every student feels included with. This desire comes from my experience with a variety of different teachers I had throughout my educational career. I have chosen the issue of learning styles in education because I want to change the way our future generations learn and are successful. Now that I know what I know, this is what I would change if I were to explain my statement of intent : I believe my statement of content was very well thought out and explained in a clear, articulate manner. However, I would discuss more about why I am so passionate about my topic and this history I have with education.
