3-6 Project One: Writing Plan ENG-123 Tayeshia Pannell Southern New Hampshire University November 11, 2023
It is important to consider whether human resources (HR) are helpful to employees. Some people believe HR is solely intended to protect the company, whereas others believe it can be a valuable resource for their employees as well. As a business administration major, I consider this argument relevant since human resources are essential to a business. HR professionals recruit, hire, train, and retain employees, as well as handle payroll, employee benefits, and compliance. Human resources professionals tend to be seen as being on the company's side, which can pose a challenge in supporting the argument that HR is helpful to employees. As a result, employees may not feel comfortable coming to HR with their concerns. Another challenge is that HR departments can differ in their effectiveness from one company to another. HR departments can provide employees with an elevated level of support if they are well-funded and well-staffed. In other companies, HR departments are small or poorly funded and cannot provide as much support. For this purpose, I will provide evidence of how HR can assist employees in a variety of areas, including: Resolving workplace conflicts Addressing workplace discrimination and harassment Navigating employee benefits and payroll Developing their careers Three key points that will be helpful in supporting my argument are: Human resources professionals can help employees resolve workplace conflicts. Conflict at work can disrupt and stress employees, and it can decrease productivity as well.
Employees can get help from HR professionals to resolve their conflicts in a fair and impartial manner. HR can also assist employees in addressing workplace harassment and discrimination. As a result, the work environment can become hostile because of discrimination and harassment. A human resource professional can assist employees with understanding their rights and filing complaints if they have been discriminated against or harassed. As employee benefits and payroll can be complex, HR professionals can assist them in navigating them, which is important since employees may have questions about how to access them. They can also ensure that employees are receiving the correct compensation and benefits. Two sources that support the key points of my argument are: Several resources on SHRM's website support the argument that HR is a valuable resource for employees. SHRM is a professional association for human resource professionals. The SHRM website provides tips on how HR professionals can help employees resolve workplace conflicts in a fair and impartial manner, for example, in an article titled "How HR Can Help Employees Resolve Workplace Conflicts." Employees who have been discriminated against or harassed can find several resources on the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's website. The EEOC enforces federal laws prohibiting workplace discrimination. In the section titled "What to Do If You Have Been Discriminated Against" on the EEOC website, the EEOC provides information on how to file a complaint.
