The classroom is a safe, healthy, and engaging environment with one teacher and pull-out for Tier 3 instruction for 5 students.14 student desks are arranged by behaviors, visual/hearing needs, and male and female. Desks are moved every marking period for further engagement, and flexibility is key. The room has designated areas for learning. 4. The school district has provided curriculum to the elementary teachers that fit the Common Core State Standards. Foundation’s-phonics and writing program, Micheal Heggerty-Phonemic Awareness, Wonders-Reading, and Comprehension. The culture and society climate, students learning styles, aligning standards, and mastery could all affect planning and delivery of the curriculum. 5. How much time each day is devoted to literacy instruction and identify and instructional programs or materials/resources? 2+ hours of the school day are devoted to literacy instruction. The curriculum resources provide the information to implement, but lesson planning, objectives, and outcomes, are the teacher’s responsibility. Teachers are provided with 40 minutes lesson planning time per day and collaboration with teachers is constant. I include literature in every subject area whenever possible (math-counting book, science-non-fiction). Supplemental materials and resources are used in whole group instruction, small group instruction, and in skills groups for intervention and enrichments. 6. Describe the academic ability of the students in the class. 100% of my students made progress using the Foundation’s mid-unit assessment and end of unit 1 assessment. The bottom 10% of the whole kindergarten is pulled for Tier 2 instruction by the Title 1 team 3 days a week for interventions. This percentage is based on Accidence benchmarks
given at the beginning of the year. The students in the classroom are diverse in cultural backgrounds, socioeconomic status, learning styles, and gender. Small skills groups are pulled for interventions and enrichments daily. 7. List below any students that have required supports or accommodations. List the number of students with an IEP, 504, specific language needs, gifted, struggling readers, second language learners. A strong knowledge of the state standards is necessary in creating effective lesson plans. Lesson plans are created with an essential question and objective based on the state standards. This helps in finding and implementing resources, technologies and materials for engaging lesson plans and student mastery. Based on the standards, what are you motivated to teach and what seems to be a challenge for this grade level? I am motivated by prior knowledge and hands-on learning. At the kindergarten level, most students learn by teacher modeling, hands-on projects, and real-world experiences. Technology is a big motivator for most students in my classroom and reaches diverse learners in the classroom. I include literature in all subject areas and is often used as an activating strategy (cold read) in literacy. This is used alongside a poem or song related to the topic. Challenges are meeting the needs of the diverse learning styles, behaviors, and engagement for five- and six- year-olds. How do your host teacher and your school use standards for planning?
