1 My Family, My Literacy Shutara Evans Rasmussen University EC240/EEC2270: Introduction to English Language Learners Barber Conte December 15, 2023
2 My Family, My Literacy The three factors that negatively impact children's educational and developmental growth are lack of basic needs (being homeless), language barriers, and abuse. Many children are becoming subjects to the risk of being homeless. Children that are homeless are very stressed out. They are worrying about what is happening with their families. They wonder where they are going to sleep, what they are going to eat, how they are going to shower, and what the other children will say. Being homeless mean the sometimes the only food that children eat is at school. For a child who is homeless, going to school is not the top priority on their list. Surviving is number one. A language barrier for children is very stressful. They are afraid because they may have just started school and they don't understand how everything is done. Learning a new language is very stressful and trying to keep up with the other children and assignments, is going to be even more stressful. The children will not know how to express themselves properly. The child may have a low self-esteem because of not understanding what is being said around them. Parents are not going to go to school and sit and talk because for them that is stressful on top of everything else, they must do. Also, their culture is different, and they may feel left out. The children with language barriers may act out in an unappropriated manner. Children who have experienced abuse, and violence, will not be able to focus on school, they will be worrying about going home. Sometimes when a child has experienced violence, the child will act out on another child. They may have problems trusting teachers, and peers. The
3 children who have witnessed abuse and have been abused may have poor self-regulation. They may have negative thinking. Some support for the families. Unfortunately, children would end up in the system of DCF if it reported. Being homeless is not always the parents’ fault, the parents could have been trying but the stress got too much, and they were not able to pay rent one month, and they are kicked out of their house. These people should not have their children taken from them, but in most cases that is what DCF does. Churches can help but not for long. As for abused women with children, they can go to a woman shelters here in Ocala. Children
