2 Taming of the Shrew Comparison In this assignment, I will be comparing Shakespeare ’ s play The taming of the Shrew to the modern-day film revisioning 10 Things I Hate About You , written by Karen McCulland and Kirsten Smith . In the original by Shakespeare Bianca , a main female characters is in love with Lucentio . Her father , Baptista , however , will not allow them the two to marry until his other daughter , Katharine , marries . This is a challenge for the young couple in love since they feel it will be difficult to locate a suitable partner for her sister . While in the 1999 modern day version Bianca is head over heels in love with a senior student named Joey and wants to date him . Then there ’ s Cameron , a lad her age in her high school class who is madly in love with her . She does , however , inform Cameron that , according to her father Walter ’ s laws , she is not permitted to date or have a partner until her elder sister Kat does . Bianca employs Cameron to attempt to locate a match for Kat , despite the fact that she plans to date Joey instead . They come up with a scheme to entice Patrick , a new student , to ask out her quick-witted , confrontational feminist sister . Mentioning the fact in the modern-day film the older sister is feminist leads me to one of my first huge difference in these two pieces . Misogyny has long been a source of contention in The Taming of the Shrew , the title suggests this is a comedy it is actually rather somber (Davis , 2023) . The use of physical and psychological abuse is present in The Taming of the Shrew . Katherina in The Taming of the Shrew is broken down and tortured into fitting into the role of what an ideal bride should be (Davis , 2023) . While the modern-day adaptation has some

3 elements of misogyny these adaptation is told through a feminist lens (Davis , 2023) . At the end of 10 Things Hate About You , Katherina while upset by Patrick ’ s actions is shown to still retain her own since of self , and Patrick is seen apologizing for his actions and embrace who Katherina really is . He cares for her without trying to change her unlike the original . Despite the fact that the film is not a straight adaptation of the play , there are some parallels that can be seen between the two . Despite their very different motives , both Baptista and Walter are anxious about their daughters ’ future and overall well-being . However , Walter is seen being more accepting of the idea that his girl be more independent and less focused on finding matches for his girls . Each representation , in its own right , appealed to a distinct generational audience , as well as moral principles and cultural conventions . Taming of the Shrew ’ s language was appropriate English with more serious tones and conventional terminology . While 10 Things I Hate About you uses more modern English and actual Humor that conveys a less serious tone . I love how the modern-day adaptation had small odes to Shakespeare in the movie . The main love interest to Katherina Patrick has the last name Verona . Verona is the setting of Shakespeare ’ s Romeo and Juliet . While Bianca and Kat ’ s last name Stratford is a nod to Shakespeare hometown . Then there is the name of the school which is Padua . Padua is the countryside near Verona that is the set of The taming of the shrew . Then the movie has Michael dress up like Shakespeare at prom .
