Amanda Do Professor Boswell English Composition 1 30th October 2022 “Academic Literacies Assignment” When it comes to reading a passage, a section of a textbook, or even just an assigned book I usually skim through it. I do this because I find myself forgetting more information about what I read if I take my time to read word by word. If there are questions that come along with the reading assignment I would read the questions first and then skim through the reading to find the answers. Another way I read textbooks or books is by listening to the audio version while I am drawing, or doing a daily task. In my opinion, I think reading is quite boring but I do read here and there some of my favorite books that we have read in school were “The Great Gatsby” and “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”, but for those books, I mostly listened to the audio version. After reading “Part 1 sections 1 and 2”, I have learned a lot about how I read might be affecting how I retain information. While reading I noticed my mind tends to wander off and lose focus. Some of the strategies that I read about was reflecting after reading. For example, after reading I should ask myself what I remember and summarize what I know from reading it, then ask myself what I still need to know, and lastly ask myself what did I learn from the overall passage. I think that this strategy will help me better retain and understand the information that I have just read. I also found it helpful to read the heading before reading the overall passage. Reading the heading gives you a heads-up on what the whole passage is about. Overall I learned some new tricks when it comes to reading long passages and they will definitely come in handy in the future.
