1 Healthcare Professionals in the 21 st Century Franklin University ENGL 220 (Q1WW) – Research Writing
2 Healthcare Professionals in the 21 st Century Healthcare has a wide and long history, and over the years there have been great advances within the healthcare profession. While there are still many experimental aspects of medicine, there are better protocols in place today to help prevent infection and allow patients to have a better quality of life. It is the duty of the healthcare professional to act as an advocate for their patients because some patients may not be educated enough about their ailments or may not feel comfortable speaking up for themselves. Patients trust their healthcare workers to have their best interest in mind and to be open and honest when treating their conditions. While this may not have always been the case in the past with medicine, in the 21st century, integrity, trust, and a focus on health and safety are the traits which define a good healthcare professional which will aid in providing the best outcomes for their patients. I have been a nurse for almost a decade, and as a healthcare professional, we have a certain amount of power when it comes to our patients. We have access to our patient's history, both medical and social, and more importantly, we are providing medications and treatments ordered by the physicians. At times, we are also in charge of adjusting doses of medications based on the patient's clinical status. It is important to have a code of ethics as a provider, and our patients expect and deserve just that. We must be trusted not only to keep private information private, but also to carry out orders with integrity. There have been many cases where nurses have been disciplined for stealing their patient's medications. Integrity and trust go hand in hand for the healthcare professional. Nurses have a great deal of autonomy, especially when working in a hospital or nursing home. In the
3 hospital, patients may see their physician once a day, in a nursing home maybe once a week. Patients and their families are trusting that we are acting ethically and that we are attempting to meet all of our patient’s needs. It is important for patients to be able to trust that their physicians and nurses are treating them appropriately and not running unnecessary tests or giving unnecessary treatments. According to The National Academics of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, approximately 30% of healthcare spending in the United States is spent on useless services (Blankenship et al., 2019). This creates a distrustful system and makes patients afraid to seek out care when they need it. Building trust between a patient and a healthcare provider can be a challenge at times. It takes a team of professionals to help a patient truly feel valued, from registration, to direct care providers, social workers, and even at times ancillary departments like nutrition or environmental services. If one person on the team upsets the patient, or if they had a bad experience previously, it could make the patient reluctant to receiving education and treatment. This is when we have to work overtime to build that trust and create a positive rapport. Once that trust is earned, positive communication can occur, potentially leading to better outcomes for the patient, because now they are listening and understand better how to treat their conditions. “Effective clinical educators should be committed to their roles as teachers, not just their jobs as practitioners” (Wilkins, 2020). Patients are more likely to retain information if they trust the source it is coming from. This brings us to the focus on health and safety. Healthcare today is more about treating a patient holistically, which means not only treating their ailments, but providing
