My name is Wessley Monnin, I live in Westerville, Ohio with my family of four including myself, my brother, and my parents. I am currently employed as a certified pharmacy technician for Walgreens, and I am pursuing a degree in Computer Science, specializing in software development. My experience with professional and academic writing is quite limited and is something I tend to shy away from when given the opportunity. The only experience I have with academic or professional writing is the experiences from my previous courses at Franklin. I have taken a few writing courses in high school, however at this stage in my life I honestly cannot remember anything pertaining to those courses. The Franklin courses I have taken that have dealt with writing and reading comprehension have provided me with a limited amount of experience, however, in all honesty I cannot say confidently that they truly improved my writing capability, nor do I feel as though they really taught me anything related to writing. I did not have great experiences with those previous courses as they only served as minor annoyances/stressors for me. Aside from those courses I would not consider myself to have received any other experiences with academic or professional writing that I can recall. Writing is absolutely one of my primary weaknesses in terms of academic capability. I have never really enjoyed writing, nor have I ever considered myself to be a well-developed writer. Some of my weaknesses pertaining to writing capabilities that contribute to my claim as a poor writer would be my consistency to be repetitive, overstate perspectives, and inability to be concise in my explanations. I honestly do not believe that I have very many strengths when it comes to writing, other than my ability to answer or define all that is required for a given writing assignment or prompt. Aside from that, my writing tends to be rather subpar at best. I do occasionally enjoy writing to a degree when it is accompanied by the freedom to choose the topic of discussion, however overall, it is not a subject I am fond of. Some topics I occasionally enjoy writing about are science related topics or topics that deal with unrealistic propositions, space exploration or the plausibility of phenomena we have yet to fully grasp or understand, or any technological subjects. The main aspect of writing that I do not enjoy is when it is accompanied by immense amounts of research, as I tend to enjoy more creative or opinion-based writing topics that only require supportive evidential research. When given topics that I am uninterested in, such as political issues or research dense topics, it has always been difficult for me to acquire proper supportive research or knowledge on the subject in general. Effective writing is the technique or process of writing formatted to be concise, accurate, and clear. This method of writing is intended to be easily understandable as well as straightforward. It is a rather self-explanatory term, meant to include any and all methods of writing effectively, meaning that the writing itself does exactly what it is intended to do in a clear and concise manner while maintaining precise accurate information. One idea about “effective writing” that really stands out for me pertains to one of the key fragments of the formula for effective writing, importance. Importance refers to the impact of your writing as well as how many others will find its contents to be valued. When writing, consideration of who the writing will impact or hold importance to is crucial for the writing to reach the intended audience. Very often individuals will read through topics they hold to a high value or importance much more easily and willingly than that of a topic that does not hold any value, interest, or importance to them. I have read for many hours about topics concerning space exploration and the plausibility
of life on other planets, but when prompted to read through topics that I do not perceive to hold any personal importance or value, I struggle to even read a fraction of the information or nearly as long of a period of time. The two factors that play a role in the importance of a piece of writing are the number of people the topic matters to as well as how much it matters to them (Graham, 2020). This aspect of effective writing appealed to me because it is something that I believe to be one of the most crucial components of an effective piece of writing. I found this concept interesting because it seems like such an obvious component of effective writing, and yet at the same time it is something that I do not actually take into consideration very often when writing. No one will read something that they do not deem to hold relevance or importance. The more importance or relevance that a piece of writing has, the greater the audience it will appeal to and be read by. As discussed previously, the topics I am typically drawn toward when writing are topics that hold significance, relevance, and importance to myself. I would not voluntarily choose to read something that does not contain any of these aspects. From my perspective I would argue that the concept of importance is the most valuable aspect of effective writing, as it is what draws the attention of the intended audience and keeps them engaged in the topic that is being written about. This concept seems like a rather crucial component to any form of writing, as people will more often and more easily read about a topic that holds some form of importance, significance, or relevancy to them on a personal level. Writing with the concept of importance in mind leads to a higher level of engagement, impact, and persuasion regarding the readers or audience.
