ARTH 334 Week 4 Discussion The film I watched this week is "Mamma Mia!" (2008), a musical romantic comedy film directed by Phyllida Lloyd. The screenplay was written by Catherine Johnson, who based it on her original stage musical of the same name. The film features music composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, former members of the Swedish pop group ABBA. The story revolves around Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), a young woman who is about to get married on a beautiful Greek island. However, she has one goal in mind - to find out who her real father is. Sophie's mother (Meryl Streep) had a diary from the year she was born and learns that there are three men (Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, and Stellan Skarsgård) that could be her real father. Because she has a burning desire to find out the truth, she invites three potential candidates to the wedding without her mother's knowledge. As the wedding day approaches, chaos ensues as old flames are rekindled, secrets are revealed, and Sophie's plan threatens to unravel. Not only does the movie feature fantastic music from the 70s band ABBA, it also captures the joy, love, and complications of relationships! What does it have in common with the films of that genre viewed in Week Four? How is it different? My comparison of the musical number "Dancing Queen" from Mama Mia! (2008) and "Good Morning" from Singing in the Rain (1952). I selected this comparison because both are iconic musical numbers that showcase the vibrancy and energy in their movie. While both numbers are entertaining and well-executed,
they do differ in style and context. The song Dancing Queen reflects Mama Mia's contemporary setting, while Good Morning is a classic Hollywood melody with a timeless appeal. The Dancing Queen scene is a lively and infectious song that perfectly captures the carefree and joyful spirit of the characters. The choreography is energetic, and the ensemble dance moves are synchronized and exuberant, creating a sense of celebration and happiness. The song itself is instantly recognizable, as it is a classic party anthem, making it a memorable moment in the film. The cinematography, when the camera circles around the characters as they dance, adds to the joyful and lively atmosphere. Camera movements help to create a sense of movement and dynamism, enhancing the energetic and lively nature of the musical number. On the other hand, "Good Morning" from Singing in the Rain is a delightful and charming musical number that showcases the incredible talent of its performers. The song is performed by the characters Don, Kathy, and Cosmo (Kelly, Reynolds & O'Conner) and is filled with intricate dance moves and wonderful chemistry between the actors. The choreography is elegant and precise, and the song itself is catchy and uplifting. The set design (stage like) is lavish, and the costumes are elegant, reflecting the glamorous Hollywood setting of the film. It's a joyful and feel- good moment in the film that highlights the magic of musical theater.
