Identifying Your Path to Success Purpose: To iden6fy challenges, barriers or obstacles that may get in the way of your being successful in college Assignment instruc1ons Answer the following ques6ons by typing your answers in the gray box under each ques6on. If you need help thinking of a challenge, there are examples on the next page. Use complete sentences and proper capitaliza6on and punctua6on to receive full credit. This assignment will be graded on comple6on of comple6ng each ques6on for 10 points, for a total of 100 points. 1. Iden6fy the most significant challenge, barrier, or obstacle that you face in your life. 2. Explain how this challenge affects your personal and/or work life. 3. Explain how this challenge affects your ability to be successful in college (for example, geNng to class on 6me, staying mo6vated, being able to focus, being able to afford books, etc.). 4. Have you tried to address this issue in the past? How? Did it work? 5. What are you doing right now to address, manage, or overcome this challenge? Are you using any par6cular resources such as counseling, 6me management strategies, tutoring, help with children? 6. What resources do you wish you had to address, manage, or overcome this challenge? Currently, the most significant challenge in my life is my addic6on to vaping. Being addicted to vaping affects every part of my life. It brings down my mood, prevents produc6vity, and makes me lose my mo6va6on to complete things that are challenging. Not to men6on that it affects my health and well-being. Vaping makes me lose my mo6va6on. Every 6me that I have quit, a\er a week when the chemical addic6on has passed, my focus becomes stronger than ever and I feel like I am more in tune with my emo6ons. When I break and vape again, I become sa6sfied with less and I start to ques6on if my effort towards college is worth it. I have been addicted for about 3 years. I have tried to quit many 6mes but have failed every 6me. The chemical withdrawals are easy to deal with, they subside a\er 3 to 7 days, but the problem is the physical habit. Recently I have been leaving my vape in one loca6on so that I cannot get to it except for certain 6mes in the day. This does help with training myself to be comfortable without having it in my presence. There aren’t really any other resources that could help me, except professional help. However, this is something really personal to me and I want to beat it on my own. I want to know that I have the power and will to do it by myself.
7. In the campus resource assignment in week 2, did you discover any resources at Lone Star College that could help you? If yes, what were they? If you did not discover any resources that could help you, what resources do you wish Lone Star had? 8. What are your greatest concerns or fears about being able to address, manage, or overcome this challenge? 9. Are you op6mis6c (hopeful) or pessimis6c (not hopeful) about being able to address, manage, or overcome this challenge in 6me to be successful this semester? 10. What ques6ons do you have for me about how Lone Star College, including your instructors, could help you address this challenge and be more successful in college? Ideas for challenges (items you may have challenges with, difficulty managing, accessing, or do not have prac:ce with) Academic skills Access to computer Childcare College knowledge, how the system works College readiness Diversity, equity and inclusion Emo6onal health o Text anxiety Equality and/or discrimina6on Family support (financially or emo6onally or other) Finances Food insecurity Goals, vision, priori6es (career or personal) No, I am confident that I will do good in school. QuiNng vaping will help me, but college is so important that I will not let anything get in the way of me finishing this program. It might be helpful if Lonestar had an addic6on center than helped students who are addicted to alcohol or nico6ne. I have two main concerns. The first is that it will reduce my ability to focus and s6ck with goals that I have made for myself. The second is that it will give me cancer and maybe kill me one day. I am vey op6mis6c that I will be able to overcome this addic6on. I have been doing very well lately. My ques6on for you is: Since vaping has become so common now, what is Lonestar doing to help students who struggle with nico6ne addic6on?
