Mitchell 1 Sarah Mithell Professor Trexler ENG-111-667 25 March 2023 Guatemalan Culture Experiencing the Guatemalan culture was a once in a lifetime opportunity. When I visited Guatemala, I went to a church where they had many different practices than the ones I am used to here in the states. They sang worship songs in their native language (Spanish). Here in the United States, most of our churches sing spiritual hymns with a choir and play instruments such as, pianos, guitars, etc... In Guatemala they play instruments that they made by hand. Some of their practices included feet washing, hugging to greet each other, and there was no discrimination. At the church I attended in Guatemala there is no Sunday school for children, they sat with their parents. Here, children are dismissed from service to attend Sunday school during service. The service lasted two hours. When we first walked in, we were greeted with hugs from everyone and taken to our seats. After everyone was seated, they began to sing worship songs in Spanish and play their instruments. The dress code is very formal, and all the women wore skirts they made by hand. Traditionally here our dress code ranges from casual to business attire, ranging from jeans to dress pants. After they finished playing music, they began service which was also in Spanish. When service was finished, they sang again and then we began washing their feet to represent Jesus washing feet in the Bible.
