NEW LITERACIES IN CURRICULUM INTEGRATION
During this lesson, digital literacies and visual literacies will both be used while learning to work together. According to Williams
and Reynolds, teachers can “look first at the characteristics and needs of their learners-academic, social/emotional, and physical-and
then design specific units with clear objectives and appropriate activities tailored to meet the identified needs” (1993, p.15). The theme
of this unit is working together, and this skill will be present in all aspects. The students will hear a read aloud and will have many turn
and talks throughout that will help guide their learning. Students will look at the visuals in the book and will discuss their
understandings and interpretations along the way. Students will fill out a KWL chart as they progress through the lesson and will
document their own learning with their peers. This lesson will engage students while helping to guide them through the teamwork
process.
