Creative Problem Solving Assignment – 15% By: Laura Jeffery Student Number: 100868584 SSW, DC Creativity: A personal understanding Professor: Clayton Rhodes Due week 11 Part 1: Warm-up
a) Stretch your thinking exercise (10 marks: ½ mark for each idea) - Provide a bullet list of 20 things that you wish could replace oil to create power: 1. Water 2. Air/wind 3. Sun 4. Moon 5. Dirt/grass 6. Garbage (if we could find a way to burn it to generate energy and not pollute our planet) 7. Busselspouts 8. Mother Nature storms (i.e. lightning) 9. Biomass 10. Geothermal (heat energy extracted from the earth's interior) 11. Hamsters running in an exercise wheel 12. Manure 13. Onions (if squeezed, we can convert their juice into methane) 14. Single-use plastic (if we could find a way to burn it to generate energy and not pollute our planet) 15. Egg Shells 16. Cardboard 17. Food leftovers 18. Vegetable and fruit skin peels 19. Used recycled paper or brown paper bags 20. Friction (sliding or rolling of one solid object over another)
b) Your creative space (5 marks: 1 mark original photo, 4 marks for at least four (4) grammatically correct sentences) Provide/insert an original picture of your creative space. Briefly describe this space. What is it about this space that brings out your creativity? My creative space would have to be my bedroom. I know that is a basic answer, not a creative one; however, this space allows me to feel comfortable, motivated and driven. In order for me to concentrate fully and use the creative thinking process, I need to be alone in my own space with no distractions. There are many reasons why my bedroom is my creative space, for starters, the space is personal. Creativity is intimate and personal meaning your creative space should feel intimate and personal as well. My desk in my room is also a very comfortable workspace for me, with the proper desk height and a very comfy desk chair. The last thing I love about my creative space is the different levels of lighting. Instead of having just one bright overhead light, my room also has lamps and twinkle lights. Light is crucial and imperative in creative spaces.
Part 2: Assessing the situation a) Diverge – Identify a problem (5 marks: ½ mark for each) Make a bulleted list of ten (10) possible situations where creative problem-solving could be applied in your life. Ten possible situations where creative problem-solving could be applied in my life would be the following: 1. Determining what to do after I graduate from my program this year. 2. Figuring out how I am going to afford another college program. 3. Figuring out what type of part-time jobs are available around me, related to my degree. 4. Finding another roommate to replace my roommate moving out after this year (need another roommate to cover rent). 5. Figuring out how to request my transcript to apply to other university/college programs for next year. 6. Figuring out how to study for two exams an hour apart on the same day. 7. Figuring out how to afford the parts my car needed to be repaired. 8. Figuring out how to afford a new car after a deer hit mine. 9. Deciding if I want to go to a new college/university, or if I want to stay at Durham College. 10. Figuring out how to make time for my homework and assignments, while maintaining a part-time job, while also attending 16 hours of placement (unpaid) for my degree.
b) Converge – Identify a problem (5 marks: 1 mark for identifying your situation, 4 marks for at least four (4) grammatically correct sentences verifying your selection) The problem I will be identifying will be determining what to do after I graduate from my program this year. I am having an extremely hard time deciding what programs to apply for after I complete my Social Service Worker degree. I want to continue my education further, however, deciding what programs are best for me has been quite challenging. Like everyone, I want a career I’m passionate about and love. I am very passionate about helping others in need, which is the reason why I chose the Social Service Worker program. Recently, it has come to my attention that the jobs offered to us after this program are not the most well-paying; in fact, most wages would be hard for me to live off only, let alone support my future family. I am a high-grade student, which opens many doors to different college and university programs I could apply to. I want to ensure the programs I apply to next, connect me to jobs and careers I’m passionate about and pay enough to live comfortably. I still have many things to decide on like, what college or university I want to apply to, what careers I'm interested in, and how many more years of school I am willing to commit to.
c) Diverge – Gather data (5 marks: ½ mark each) - Read and answer at least 10 of the questions below (responding to those that fit your situation). Stretch your mind to identify and capture as many data points as possible (90). 1. Who is involved in this situation? Who else? - The person mainly involved in this situation would be me since I am the one deciding on what to do after I graduate. However, my family is also involved since they support me. 2. What is happening? What else? - My program is coming to an end and I am graduating at the end of April. I have to decide what other programs I am interested in and apply to them soon. I also have to figure out what college or university I want to apply to and how many years I am willing to commit to my education. 3. When is this occurring (or not occurring)? - I would like to apply as soon as I make up my mind. I would like to apply by the first weekend of December. I am unsure of the deadline which is why I would like to do this as soon as possible. 4. How are you being affected? - I am being affected by being extremely stressed out about not knowing what direction to pick and not having a plan. Whatever program I decide will affect my future. 5. How are others being affected? - My family is affected because they live two and a half hours away from me here in Oshawa. If I choose to stay at Durham College or go to another school they will most likely still be far away. Which will affect how much time we spend together and how often I get to see them. 6. How have you tried to solve this situation so far? How else? - So far, I have looked into programs offered at Durham College related to mental health. I have found two programs that I am interested in. One is Addictions and Mental Health (graduate certificate); this program length is three semesters. The second one is Community Mental Health – Honours Bachelor; this program length is nine semesters. 7. What hard data do you have about this? Some hard data I have on the program Addictions and Mental Health (graduate certificate) is: The program length is three semesters. Credential is Ontario College Graduate Certificate. Tuition for Year One domestic is $5,026 (CAD). Some career options would be Addiction crisis worker, Addiction counsellor, Case manager, Community support worker, Counsellor/group facilitator, Crisis outreach/intervention worker, Harm reduction worker, Mental health support worker, or Withdrawal management counsellor. The admission requirements are the following: Degree in psychology or social work or related discipline or
