SFTY 201 - Serenity Miller (December 3
rd
, 2023)
1)Explain the Hazard Communication Standard (HAZCOM).
The hazard communication standard is enforced to ensure that chemicals are labeled and
appropriately used for workers. That said, four main changes to this standard have come about.
Hazard Classification - This change sets the standard that all chemicals must have or be
provided a "classification of health and physical hazards, as well as classification of
mixtures" (OSHA, 2023).
Labels - This change sets the standard that all chemicals must provide a label that
"includes a harmonized signal word, pictogram, and hazard statement for each hazard
class and category. Plus, a precautionary statement" (OSHA, 2023).
Safety Data Sheets - This change sets the standard that all chemicals must have a
"specified 16-section format" (OSHA, 2023).
Information Training - This change sets the standard that all workers who utilize
chemicals must be trained to use and understand the safety data sheets.
2)Identify the four “Lists of Hazardous Waste” and what they cover. Provide an example of each.
Four different types of hazardous wastes include listed waste, characterize waste, universal
waste, and mixed waste. For example, listed waste is created from the production of dyes.
Meanwhile, listed waste has four sub-types: the F-list, K-list, P-list, and U-list.
F-List:
This type of waste is "produced from manufacturing and industrial processes"
(EHS, 2023).
K-List:
This type of waste is specified waste from a specific industry.
P-List:
This type of waste "are specific commercial chemical products that are disposed
of, but unused" (EHS, 2023).
U-List:
This type of waste "are specific commercial chemical products that are disposed
of, but unused" (EHS, 2023).
Characterize waste, which is like solid waste, such as household waste. Meanwhile,
characterized waste can be further broken down into four categories: ignitability, Corrosivity,
Reactivity, and Toxicity. Universal waste, such as batteries, is commonly created. The last is a
mixed waste "that contains both hazardous and radioactive components" (EHS, 2023). This type
of waste is best known as power plant waste.
3)Explain the basic principles of fire prevention and how security and property insurance
interface with fire prevention.
Fire prevention is essential to "defending lives and possessions from the effects of fires"
(OSHA, 2023). It concerns many practices and principles to lower the risk of fires and minimize
their potential damage. Meanwhile, security measures and property insurance support fire
prevention efforts. There are two basic principles when it comes to the principles of fire
protection and their correlation with security and property insurance.
Education:
Fire prevention starts with educating individuals about the hazards associated with fires.
Awareness:
Raising awareness involves teaching individuals about the importance of fire safety
practices.
Security and property insurance providers offer informational materials, conferences, or
online resources to educate their customers about fire safety.
