Essay:
Outline
I.
Introduction
(1-1.5
pages)
a.
What
is
a
recent/relevant/discussed
story
that
exemplifies
the
problem:
People
shouldn't
let
trauma
define
them;
the
past
doesn't
have
to
dictate
the
future,
despite
the
fact
that
some
people
attribute
their
poor
quality
of
life
to
traumatic
experiences
from
their
past.
Carrying
the
burden
of
the
past
is
a
conscious
decision,
just
as
it
is
possible
to
make
a
conscious
decision
to
let
go
and
go
on. Dr.
Robert
Firestone
has
written
about
the
negative
effects
that
interpersonal
suffering and
upsetting
early
experiences
may
have
on
a
person's
autonomy
and
expression
of
uniqueness,
as
well
as
how
they
can
result
in
the
development
of
strong
psychological
barriers.
No
child
is
born
wicked
or
sinful,
according
to
Firestone;
rather,
the
psychological
barriers
that
kids
build
up
early
on
are
suitable
for
the
actual
threats
to
their
developing
selves.
These
defenses
try
to
manage
and
lessen
the
distressing
events
and
feelings
that
one
experiences
during
their
formative
years;
nevertheless,
as
has
been
stated,
the
defensive
adaption
tends
to
become
progressively
dysfunctional.
When
the
threat
has
passed,
one's
capacity
and
competence
will
be
limited
if
these
defensive
adaptations
are
allowed
to
continue.
The
ability
to
choose
how
we
want
to
be,
what
kind
of
life
we
want
to
live,
and
not letting
the
past
dictate
the
present
is
the
power
of
maturity.
"Of
all
the
things
trauma
takes
away
from
us,
the
worst
is
our desire,
or
even
our
ability,
to
be
vulnerable,"
sociologist
Brene
Brown
wrote.
There
needs
to
be
some
reclaiming.
Being
vulnerable,
according
to
Brown,
"is
about
having
the
confidence
to
show
up
and
be
seen.”
Your
mindset

not
Your
biggest

is
some

Success

comes
from
you,
not
from
your
past.
b.
Identify
connection
between
this
story
and
YOUR
perspective/argument
on
the
topic:
Every
encounter
in
life
gives
us
the
chance
to
learn
and
grow.
The
degree
to
which
we
choose
to
evolve
as
a
result
of
that
experience
is
up
to
us.
You
are
not
actually
living
if
you
decide
to
stay
in
the
past.
Recognize
that
you
are
not
to
blame
for
the
negative
experiences
you
continue
to
encounter.
Your
possibilities,
your
passion,
your
confidence,
your
hope,
and
your
feeling
of
self-
worth
will
all
be
destroyed
if
you
stay
there.
Your
current
reality
and
your
existence
are
entirely
your
responsibility.
The
only
aspect
of
the
past
we
can
change
is
how
it
has
changed
us
in
the
present.
The
past
does
not
determine
the
present
or
future
unless
we
let
it.

Craft

statement
that
identifies

states
your

Section
2:
Defining
the
problem
or
How
did
we
get
here?
(4-5
pages)
a.
How
did
we
get
here?
(Quotes
from
1
or
2
sources):
i.
Feel
the
hurt
of
the
past,
comprehend
it
to
end
it,
and
change
your
future
course.
Trauma,
according
to
Levine,
"has
both
the
capacity
to
destroy
and
the
potential
to
alter
and
revive."
Be
sure
that
you
possess
the
courage,
strength,
and
openness
necessary
to
transform,
revive,
and
reclaim
oneself.
It's
not
your
fault,
yet
your
future
depends
on
it.
ii.
Moving
ahead
entails
realizing
and
accepting
that
you
are
not
at
blame.
You
may
start
moving
forward
and
living
the
life
you
were
meant
to
once
you
adopt
the
phrase
"it's
not
your
fault."
Learn
from
the
past
but
don't
get
stuck
there;
it
has
lessons
for
the
future.
Stop
criticizing
and
blaming
people
for
your
situation
in
life
or
the
terrible
decisions
you
have
made.
You
alone
are
to
blame
for
your
careless
actions
and
any
unfavorable
results
since
you
are
the
only
one
who
has
ruined
your
life.
Blaming
others
has
an
air
of
immaturity,
folly,
and
denial
about
it.
Writing
as
Craig
Harper,
“blame
game
is
a
slippery
slope
of
self-pity,
self-destruction
and
futility
that’s
played
by
far
too
many
people
to
their
own
detriment.”
b.
Define
your
key
term
(Use
quotes
from
1
or
2
sources):
i.
In
a
moment
in
the
film
Good
Will
Hunting,
Robin
Williams,
who
plays
a
therapist,
says
the
phrase
"It's
not
your
fault"
to
Will,
a
character
who
has
a
tendency
toward
self-destruction.
One
can
free
oneself
from
the
agony
of
their
past
by
realizing
that
it
was
not
your
fault.
According
to
Craig
Harper,
"
‘blame
game
is
a
slippery
slope
of
self-pity,
self-destruction
futility
that’s
played
by
far
too
many
people
to
their
own
detriment”
c.
What
are
some
other
arguments
for
what
the
problem
is?
Why
is
your
emphasis/perspective
preferable
to
these
other
arguments?
(Quotes
from
1-2sources)
i.
Being
stuck
in
the
past
will
ruin
you.
Perry
Noble
said,
“If
you
don’t
let
your
past
die,
them
it
won’t
let
you
live.
Period.”
Stop
giving
your
past
permission
to
speak!
d.
Why
is
this
urgent
now?

or
