Synthesis Paper Assignment EDUC 871 Synthesis Paper Assignment The curriculum is the heart of education; it is essential that before adopting a new curriculum, or any change that it fits the student population that is intended. The adaptation of any new curriculum must meet all the learning needs of all its students. The districts must be their independent research and pilot different schools within its campus to assess the new curriculum. Once they review the data and determine the curriculum meets the learning needs of their students, they move to the next step to meet with all stakeholders before implementation. This paper will focus on assessing the curriculum (learning styles), meeting the needs of all its students (human development), and all stakeholders (social force). This paper will reference the textbook, curriculum leadership: Readings for developing quality educational programs. The law passed in the early 2000s that no child would be left behind demands that all students receive an equitable education. School leaders must consider when planning to change or implement a new curriculum. Social Forces “Social forces in the economy, polity, and culture have contributed to shifts in the structure of families, which are increasingly matters of choice rather than social prescriptions. Marriage and partnering, more generally, have evolved from companionate to individualized institutions; concerns for children and their wellbeing also reflect more considerable social changes (Su, J. H. 2023)”. The education system in the U.S. has become, but it’s still behind in serving every student's educational needs. A new curriculum must be introduced and updated at least every five years; this is done to ensure that students are given the latest educational strategies and keep students flowing with the current events and technological forces that shape our environment. Even when research supports a curriculum and demonstrates its effectiveness
Synthesis Paper Assignment EDUC 871 in other similar districts, another factor that has a high impact on student achievement is the home environment of every student. Students' demographics are very different within the same community. Some schools are zoned to households higher than the average person can afford, and there are families zoned to schools where the apartment rent is below the nation's average. This diversity makes it hard for students in the same district to learn at the same rate. While some students have after-school tutors, others must work to help their parents put food on their tables, and education is the last thing on their minds. There are other barriers other than demographical differences, like English Learners and those who are new to the country and have language walls to participate in adopting a new curriculum. Social and emotional awareness is another social factor that can drive students from learning. Students with low social-emotional understanding are likelier to drop out of school and have behavioral problems. In economically disadvantaged sectors, students are exposed to more violent scenes, substance abuse, and gang affiliations that will drive their decision to quit school and not make it a priority. These social forces influence the decision of which curriculum best fits the needs of their students and how meaningful it will be for those students. The objective is to ensure an equitable curriculum that allows all students to learn and engage.
