Roxane Gay’s essay “When Twitter Does What Journalism Cannot” introduces several implied
statements. By using her text as evidence, form a logical argument that derives from your
interpretation of the source. The essay must introduce a clear and focused thesis statement, and
defend the central claim with supporting evidence from the source. The essay must consist of an
introduction,
at least
three body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
Choose one of the following topic questions:

Roxane Gay differentiates between social media platforms and journalism. Why is it
necessary to acknowledge these differences and how can they better help individuals to
rethink their uses?

Roxane Gay suggests that accurate information as well as misinformation can be spread
through social media and established journalistic outlets. Why is it important to recognize
the dissemination of information in this specific way and how does this affect the reader /
viewer?

Roxane Gay suggests that social media can be used to amplify voices and to build
communities. According to the author, why is it necessary to have various platforms that
encourage collaboration and community? Furthermore, why is it important to have open
access forums through which individuals can access information?

Roxane Gay explores the immediacy with which information is spread. She further
explains how complex issues and events require substantial time to both gain data and
insight in order to ensure that the information is accurate. What is she suggesting? Why
must an individual value the immediate consumption of information, but also understand
the need to take time to process this information?
