Mark Haddon’s “
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time
” is a postmodernist
mystery novel that utilizes metafiction as the protagonist Christopher John Francis Boone writes
and talks about his own novel within the actual novel the readers are reading. Although
Christopher writes his novel as a murder mystery, the actual novel explores many important
aspects of a society as it follows the trials and tribulations of the protagonist Christopher, who
obviously deals with an unnamed syndrome, that highly mirrors Asperger's Syndrome, especially
when the protagonist states he cannot tell a lie as they are illogical. Centering the story around
his point of view the reader is thrusted into a stimulating perspective of his world as they are
introduced to all sorts of characters, most that do not really fully understand Christopher or his
many unique skills and talents. Not only is it a story that seems to emphasize honesty and trust
but is also one about seeing things from a different perspective when transitioning from youth to
maturity as the protagonist, as an outsider to your typical “society'' embarks on his “quest” and
finds himself along the way.

twists on the classical detective literary formula can actually open up deeper levels of
engagement, without excluding your less seasoned readers especially when incorporating
universal themes such as childhood and innocence that comes with it. It is the discussion of
maturity and the themes of coming of age that led to my choosing of this article.
