EDUC771 – Curriculum Change Plan: Part 1 – Research Matrix Assignment 2 Curriculum Change Plan Proposed Topic: 9 th Grade English/Language Arts Unit 1. Title Journal of Curriculum Studies Author(s) Andreas Nordin & Daniel Sundberg Date of Publication June 19, 2018 Topic Exploring curriculum changes using discursive institutionalism – a conceptual framework Theories “By focusing specifically on curriculum change, this article proposes how discourse institutionalism can contribute to the so- called ‘crisis of curriculum theory.’” (Nordin & Sundberg, 2018) Research Question To what extent and in what ways can discourse institutionalism contribute to an overall understanding of curriculum changing? Also, what analysis can be given to curriculum change looking through the prism of discourse institutionalism? Methodology “Modernist approaches have been theoretically challenged by approaches such as world-system theories, post-structural theories and world culture theories, each trying to widen the theoretical and methodological gaze of modernist approaches emanating out of a functionalistic rationale backed up by human capital theory.” (Nordin & Sundberg, 2018) Results Overall, these authors found that in order to overcome what many describe to be a ‘crisis’ in terms of contemporary curriculum theory and curriculum change, in general, there have to be new and different perspectives on the “symbolic control of the ‘who’ (different categories of agents), the ‘where’ (temporal and spatial relations) and the ‘what’ (the language and discourses) need to be addressed and explored.” (Nordin & Sundberg, 2018) Explain the application to your curriculum change plan. This resource looks at the different ramifications of what curriculum change and curriculum change theory poses as it relates to my changing a 9 th grade English unit in an online/virtual learning environment. 2. Title Academic Medicine Author(s) David Sklar Date of Publication October 2018 Topic Implementing Curriculum Change: Choosing Strategies, Overcoming Resistance, and Embracing Values Theories Curriculum Change via Development of a Track; The Importance of Students in Implementing Curriculum Change Research Question What is the importance of the role students play when thinking about or actually implementing a curriculum change plan at the secondary education level? Methodology Curriculum reform through curriculum change implementation
EDUC771 – Curriculum Change Plan: Part 1 – Research Matrix Assignment 3 in the classroom; Looking at recommendations from experts in the field in regards to impacts of implementing or putting in place a curriculum change plan Results “Minor curriculum adjustments and optional tracks and programs provide flexibility for students and can often be implemented without threatening institutional hierarchies or values.” (Sklar, 2018) Explain the application to your curriculum change plan. This resource really takes a strong look at outcomes from implementing any kind of curriculum change and how it relates to those who are described as the ‘most important stakeholders’ affected by curriculum change, the students. 3. Title Journal of Curriculum Studies Author(s) Richard Harris & Suzanne Graham Date of Publication August 26, 2018 Topic Engaging with curriculum reform: insights from English teachers’ willingness to support curriculum change Theories This article researched and explored the overall “extent to which secondary school history teachers in England willingly engaged with a series of concurrent curriculum reforms, and the factors that shaped their level of agency in the process.” (Harris & Graham, 2018) Research Question What issues do teachers identify as important in the face of change? To what extent do these vary by school type and teacher experience/role? Methodology “The data for this paper are drawn from an annual online survey, co-created by the first author of this paper and conducted on behalf of the Historical Association. The survey started in 2009 but this paper focuses on 2015–2017 because of the degree of curriculum changes being imposed on schools during this period.” (Harris & Graham, 2018) Results Overall, teachers in this study gave favorable remarks on new content being introduced via a curriculum change plan, but concerns were recognized and brought up due to poor availability of textbooks, uncertainty over criteria as it related to grading assignments, and the overall amount of new content that was expected to be taught and retained by students over the course of a school year semester. Explain the application to your curriculum change plan. This resource relates to my curriculum change topic and plan in that it takes an actual real-life example of implementation of a curriculum change in the classroom and the ramifications therein that were seen as a result.
EDUC771 – Curriculum Change Plan: Part 1 – Research Matrix Assignment 4 4. Title The Qualitative Report Author(s) Seyyed Ostovar-Namaghi Date of Publication February 2017 Topic Language Teachers’ Evaluation of Curriculum Change: A Qualitative Study Theories This study aimed to theorize “language teachers' evaluation of a top-down curriculum change by eliciting their perspectives through open-ended qualitative interviews.” (Ostovar-Namaghi, 2017) Research Question What is the main conflict of interest seen between practitioners and policy-makers as it relates to implementing curriculum change in the classroom? Methodology “Instead of using the statistical sampling procedure, which is common in hypothetico-deductive studies, this study made use of purposive, snowball and theoretical sampling procedures.” (Ostovar-Namaghi, 2017) Results This study finds that previous findings are accurate where negative consequences of top-down curriculum change can lead to issues with implementation in the classroom. “Although previous findings have descriptive power, they lack in explanatory power since they do not explain why policy makers deliberately weed out the contextual constraints of top-down curricular change as irrelevant. The findings of this study, however, go beyond description by relating the deliberate overlook of contextual constraints to the conflict of interest between practitioners and policy makers.” (Ostovar-Namaghi, 2017) Explain the application to your curriculum change plan. This resource and subsequent study presented really give great data as to specific success/failure statistics when it comes to implementing top-down curriculum change. This article suggests that smaller-level curriculum change in chunks can really go a long way to making the curriculum transition much smoother in the long run. 5. Title Teaching in Higher Education Author(s) J. Annala, J. Linden, M. Makinen, J. Henriksson Date of Publication February 8, 2021 Topic Understanding academic agency in curriculum change in higher education Theories “This study explores the agency of academics and the structures that enable or impede agency in curriculum change. The study was conducted at a research university that experienced curriculum change in two waves: the first on a departmental level, and the second as a university-wide curriculum change.”
EDUC771 – Curriculum Change Plan: Part 1 – Research Matrix Assignment 5 (Annala et. al., 2021) Research Question What is the relationship between agency and structure in different forms of curriculum change? Methodology “Interviews were conducted with the same academics after both waves. Thematic analysis generated six forms of agency. Progressive, oppositional, territorial, bridge-building, and accommodating agency appeared in both contexts.” (Annala et. al., 2021) Results The results of this study and overall research produced data that showed that the body of agency remained the same no matter the curriculum change organization pattern an any departmental level. Explain the application to your curriculum change plan. This resource is related to my topic of curriculum change plan in that it constructs a specific method of instituting curriculum change using different waves of said change: 1.) at the departmental level, and 2.) at the institution level. 6. Title Sage Journals Author(s) Aishah Alkahtani Date of Publication June 5, 2017 Topic Curriculum change management and workload Theories This article examines the different ways in which teachers in Saudi Arabia responded to challenges imposed by the implementation and adoption of a new curriculum. Research Question What were the issues that came about as a result of the curriculum change and why did they present once the change took effect? Methodology “Mixed approaches (i.e. quantitative and qualitative) were used to collect data from 100 teachers in questionnaires and from 11 teachers in interviews. The study used descriptive analysis, which is used for quantitative data, and used grounded theory techniques for qualitative analysis. The research was undertaken in 2 major cities in Saudi Arabia with an opportunistic sample of teachers drawn from four single-sex schools for both boys and girls.” (Alkahtani, 2017) Results “The findings generated from this study provide information about many factors in the management of educational change. These factors include perceived needs for longer lessons, a longer school day, smaller class sizes, fewer subjects in the curriculum, and lesser amounts of material taught, as well as the knotty training and equipment maintenance problems.” (Alkahtani, 2017) Explain the application to This resource took a more direct approach and asked teachers and educators directly and specifically as to what issues or

Also, this article went into the “Why?” of what caused said issues due to curriculum change overall. 7. Title Journal of Curriculum Studies Author(s) Christine Winter Date of Publication January 5, 2017 Topic Curriculum policy reform in an era of technical accountability: ‘fixing’ curriculum, teachers and students in English schools Theories “Curriculum policy makes a significant contribution to the technical accountability culture through complicity in performativity, high-stakes testing and datafication, at the same time as constituting student and teacher subjectivities.” (Winter, 2017) Research Question What are teachers’ and stakeholders’ experiences of curriculum policy reform in ‘disadvantaged’ English schools? Methodology “Recordings were transcribed and a first-stage manual analysis took place using Braun & Clarke, 2006 approach, producing 28 initial codes which were collapsed into 15 themes. Following transcription of the individual interviews with two Geography teachers, second-stage analysis built on the first-stage codes and themes to produce 14 codes and three themes: performativity (7 codes), curriculum configuration (4) and academic culture (3).” (Winter, 2017) Results “Education systems increasingly controlled and subject to surveillance through curriculum policy influence who teachers and students are and who they will become, in other words, their sense of self, their subjectivity. The dominant technical–rational curriculum system claims to be a comprehensive, high trust system for educational improvement. A closer look through the lens of a philosophical ‘fix’ reveals a deficit in ethical responsibility, brought about by the system’s reliance on standardization, datafication and conformity around predetermined and externally imposed norms and neglecting alternative possibilities of being.” (Winter, 2017) Explain the application to your curriculum change plan. This resource gives a very thorough and data-driven finding of evidence as to what influences go into changing curriculum and for what reasons curriculum overall need to be changed. 8.
