2 WRITING EXPECTATIONS HANDOUT Abstract When a teacher gives students assignments for any class the expectations should be made clear. A way to make these expectations clear is to have them written out for students. One way to have these expectations put in one place for students and parents to see is by making it into a handout. The handout provided is an example of how this can be done. Additionally, this handout includes expectations for me during the writing process to inform parents of what the all-around expectations are. I would use this handout as the foundation for any writing assignment given in my 9 th and 10 th grade English classes. Having a solid and consistent foundation is essential for students to succeed. If students are not informed of what is expected of them, they will not be able to complete their assignments. Students would need to use these expectations in unison with their assignment rubrics to be successful. I would suggest that these be set in place at the beginning of the year because as the year goes on, they will become routine. Keywords: expectations, handout, student, teacher, writing
3 WRITING EXPECTATIONS HANDOUT Writing with Rauch (9 th and 10 th grade English) In the English classroom, we wear many hats. Those hats include being readers, listeners, teachers (I learn a lot from my students), and writers. This handout will help both students and parents to know what types of writing we will work on this year as well as my expectations for students and myself during our time working as writers. Types of writing This school year students will be expected to complete the following types of writing: narrative, informative, research, and argumentative. The Drafting Process Student Role: Be sure you are following the rubric for each writing. If you are confused make sure to ask Miss Rauch or your classmates clarifying questions. Attend coaching meetings. o I (Miss Rauch) will provide a schedule of which days each student is expected to meet with me in class. If you are not present the day of your meeting you need to reschedule it with me. In these meetings, we will look at your writing and I will give advice. Be open to advice on your writing. Receiving advice does not mean you are wrong it just means there is room for improvement. Use your in-class writing time responsibly. o There is no reason these assignments should not be completed in class but if your time is not used responsibly, I will be noting and will take that into consideration if your assignment is not turned in on time.
