You’ve identified a problem in your workplace and potential research questions. It’s important to connect professional literature to your action research by reviewing the record of other people’s experiences to better understand the problem, issue, concern, or need. Analysis, synthesis, and conclusions drawn from the literature review findings can be used to formulate or support possible solutions and set the stage for determining action research design, methodology, and a data collection plan (Mills, 2007). Develop an original response to these questions: The goal of the literature review is to review what others have said about the problem, issue, concern, or need you identified and promising solutions. How will you search for appropriate scholarly literature? Share strategies you will use to assure your literature review is connected to your action research. Conducting a thorough and effective literature review is crucial for informing your action research. Searching for scholarly literature involves using various online databases, search engines, and library resources. First you’d have to define your research question and the objectives. Then use keywords in the search engines of well respected websites, such as JSTOR, Google Scholar, SAGE etc… “Rigorous evidence identification is essential for systematic reviews” (Gusenbauer & Haddaway, 2020). From there, you can even use the citations from your chosen articles to obtain other articles that are relevant to your topic. Check the alignment of your question for the problem, the purpose of your action research, and the research questions. Make sure that all three elements connect with one another cohesively. It would be helpful to stay organized, such as incorporating EndNote to organize your references. Lastly, synthesize the information by identifying common themes, patterns, and gaps. This synthesis will help you build a coherent narrative in your literature review that directly informs your action research. Thinking about your identified potential research question(s), discuss how you will identify and organize themes to guide your literature review. Point out how the thematic literature review will inform and refine the research question(s) you will investigate in an action research plan. When reflecting on my research questions for my action research of 5th grade students scoring below basic in math for the PSSA, I want to be able to identify and organize themes that will guide my literature review. I’d start by identifying key concepts related to improving math performance in 5th-grade students, such as implementing small-group differentiated instruction more into the learning environment. I would examine existing studies and research articles related to math education, particularly those focused on improving scores for students performing below basic on standardized tests. A thematic literature review plays a crucial role in informing and refining the research questions for an action research plan. The thematic literature review helps identify key themes, concepts, and patterns within the existing body of knowledge. This process will allow myself to gain a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing the research topic, in this case, improving 5th-grade PSSA math scores from below basic. What keyword phrases do you think will be helpful in rendering the best academic research for your topic? When conducting academic research for my topic, there are a few keywords that would be helpful. They would be: PSSA math, 5th grade math, below basic math, small-group differentiated instruction. These keywords will help to provide
articles that will connect to the research topic. Comment on the posts of at least two classmates. APA citations are required only for the original response. In your peer responses, consider sharing strategies to help your classmates expand or narrow their research strategy. References Gusenbauer, M., & Haddaway, N. R. (2020). Which academic search systems are suitable for systematic reviews or meta‐analyses? Evaluating retrieval qualities of Google Scholar, PubMed, and 26 other resources.
