Case Study Chapter 1
The Art of Dementia Care – Chapter 1: Think About it – Pg. 14
1.
Review the set of five beliefs described in the chapter. Do you agree with all of them?
What are some Important lessons about life and living that people with dementia
have taught you?
I agree with all 5 beliefs described in this chapter because living life has taught me you
should appreciate life more. It has help give me a better understanding of life and the
different point of views. On page 9 belief 1, It has been suggested that a supportive social
environment helps lessen the disability caused by dementia.
I concur since it's crucial to
surround yourself with supportive individuals that are excellent for your cognitive function
before being diagnosed with dementia. On page 10 belief 2, It states that each person with
dementia is unique, and I agree since I believe that each person with dementia loses their
memories in a distinct way. On page 11, belief 3 It is about thriving in relationships that are
enjoyable. According to what I've observed, persons who have dementia frequently reflect on
the things they treasured before developing the disease. On page 12, belief 4 I agree with the
statement that people with dementia should be permitted to use their full mental capacity
since I believe they try very hard to recall but are unable to.
On page 13, belief 5 It is unfortunate because those who have dementia can provide valuable
lessons to us. I do concur with this since it demonstrates that life is more complex than what
the eye can see. People need to stop obsessing about the past and the future and focus on the
here and now.
2.
Have you known someone like Auguste Deiter who seemed cut off from her own self
due to dementia? What did this person say or do that affected you? Knowing what
you know, now how might you have reached out to this person?
The person that was like Auguste Deiter is my grandmother she can remember certain
things, but she is losing her memory little by little. My grandmother sister Lucy had the
beginning stages of dementia and unfortunately she had passed away because it went from
dementia to Alzheimer’s. My grandmother has the beginning stages of dementia, and it is sad
when you see them, and they can’t remember who you are at times. It has affected me
because I really didn’t know the real meaning of dementia and feel bad that I wasn’t more
aware of how you should show them love at all times even though they don’t remember. My
grandmothers sister my aunt I could have reached out more by calling and being there
through her slow dying process.
