1 Week 9 Assignment Stecia Holloway ENG 201 Dr. Kasraie August 31, 2023
2 Introduction An American poet and activist name Amanda Gorman once quoted, " it takes a monster to kill children. but to watch monsters kill children again and again and do nothing isn't just insanity-- its inhumanity." Since 2020 covid has affected a lot of companies going out of business, food prices to go up, and most importantly loved ones crying and hurting more. There has been a huge increase in gun violence every 2 months since 2020 and go to the point where every day you see a new crime scene on the news or on social media and people in the comments like, “Another day in Philly”. So, I wanted to focus on why community centers having more open 24 hours for kids will be helpful to the community. The community members should Have free 24/7 counseling, sheltering and more in the community centers, because it will help with less youth being affected by gun violence, have 24/7 surveillance and counseling, and being a safe space for adults and kids. Problem The main problem of not too many community centers open 24/7 because there's not enough resources, people feeling thy are not a safe space, and not having an escape from personal stuff. Sarah Reyes had explained that having an environmental change such as blighting the buildings, cleaning abandoned lots, and having better lighting will help with increasing a sense of safety in a neighborhood and connectedness among neighbors and reduce the locations where illegal guns are stored and where illegal activity occurs (Reyes, 10). It Can also help with a lot of decreasing the gun violence's. The effect of this problem is that families lose loved ones as while as being hurt and upset. Sarah Reyes had said that "One life lost to senseless violence is one too many and the uptick in gun violence is tearing our communities apart. As we close in on the end of a year where we saw unprecedented levels of shootings and homicides, part of a disturbing trend nationwide." The gun violence has a negative on the community, but also on friends and family. Solution Since 2020, there have been a major problem with gun violence more than ever and every year the gun violence has increased, which causes more mothers, fathers, and others crying and hurting. So, a solution to having free 24/7 counseling, sheltering and more in the community centers will help with decreasing the gun violence and having less families crying and hurting from losing a family member, as well with helping those that need help with coping and healing. Having workers from "Medical Examiner’s Office" come in and "offers free bereavement support to grieving individuals." as well as "Healthy Minds Philly who has "free mental health screening tool for anyone who is wondering if they may need help and give away toolkits to
3 those that are looking for support, hotlines, or even resources to residents" that are or aren't struggling and want help (Reyes, 10). The effort of having more community centers open 24/7 will help with decreasing the gun violence, as well as helping those with healing and coping because of the resources and being a safe space for the community. Having programs for the youth and having available resources that will be helpful to the community will make an enormous difference because it will make the community see that someone is willing to help their kids and others. This is a major piece of the historic $155 million investment in a wide array of violence prevention programming and services that contribute to the City’s violence prevention and reduction goals (Reyes, 14). Having programs for the community will help with preventing and decreasing violence. Risk My main opposing risk is still losing the community to gun violence because the community is not getting what they needed, as of healing the correct way and not having the proper help. Without proper education, parents, teachers, and other well- meaning figures may unknowingly worsen a child or youth’s mental health problems (Collins & Swoveland, 8). Gun violence is increasing and still having the community being affected is by not having enough or proper resources and people helping to want a change. Without the proper resources and other well- meaning figures may unknowingly worsen a child mental health problem (Collins & Swoveland, 11). By the youth not having the proper or enough help from their guardiancies or resources will make the community still lose their kids to gun violence. Benefits The first important benefits of this solution to having more 24/7 community centers is that it will help with less youth being affected by gun violence. By having agency leaders, who supply services that encourage changes by nurturing residents’ social connections and fostering strong social networks within the community. By doing that it helps to unite the community, and they will be able to be more easily influenced by the needed systematic changes to norms and values (Collins & Swoveland, 7). The second important benefit of this solution to having more 24/7 community centers is having 24/7 surveillance and counseling. Having "Frequency of foot patrols. Location of cameras. Partnerships with community leaders." along with having "The Medical Examiner’s Office offers free bereavement support to grieving individuals." and "The Department of Behavioral Health offers counseling and support. Philadelphians can call at any time for resources (Reyes, 21). The last benefit that will be a solution to having more 24/7 community centers is by being a safe space for adults and kids. Having enrichment opportunities and safe havens for the youth
