Alvarado 1 Vanessa Alvarado Raquel Ochs CHDEV-1-15458 6/7/2023 Activity 3B Part 1: Based on the article: Describe “Emergent Curriculum” What do advocates of this ap- proach believe? What are the sources of Emergent Curriculum? Where do the ideas for teachers who implement emergent curriculum come from? Emergent Curriculum is the naturally individualized practice of responding to each child’s inter- ests using open ended materials to create a play-based environment. The curriculum comes from the children and the teachers playing together as the children are the construction of the curricu- lum. Advocates of this approach believe that standardization of curriculum does not meet each child individual development and can leave them falling behind. They believe that the best cur- riculum can come from the child to help guide the teacher. Based on the article, how do children benefit from Emergent Curriculum? As a teacher of young children would you like to use this approach? Why or why not? Children benefit as their individual needs are met so they are less likely to fall behind. I would like to start implementing this approach, so my students have the best chance at not only keeping up in school, but also to help them develop in a healthy environment. Part 2: What’s one important idea you took from the video? Why do you believe it’s important?
Alvarado 2 It is important to step back and just observe the children as they play. Many people I have worked with, myself included, feel the need to continuously step in during play to help solve is- sues or to ask questions. While that is still important, it is equally as important to let the children just be as they are. They benefit much more if they are allowed to figure things out themselves instead of constantly being policed. Did you see all the curriculum areas being covered such as math, science, reading, writing, language, and creative art? Explain what you observed in regards to the curriculum areas and how the children benefitted socially, emotionally, physically, cognitively. We are able to observe the children directly engaging in math, language, writing, science and creative art. These subjects were naturally brought up as their main project continued. Math was observed when they bought the step stool and counted out their blocks. Writing, reading and lan- guage were observed in the noted they left to each other as well as when they were collaborating on projects. Creative art was observed as they drew and painted their observations. Science was observed as they learned about perspective changes and by using their observational skills. The natural curiosity encouraged them to talk and communicate with each other as well as involve themselves physically in the play. They were also able to engage themselves in conflict resolu- tion as the project went on. How can you take what you have learned about project work in the video and apply it to your current or future use with students? This has made me more confident in starting long term projects. I worried that all the subjects would not be met focusing on one subject long term as I now have the confidence that a child’s natural curiosity will help guide the learning.
