Age Group: Toddlers

before the implementation:
Observe & Record
I have observed and recorded: (Provide a brief summary of your observation (s) including development and interest/areas of inquiry.)
The toddlers have recently had continuous interests in animals and especially farm animals! During carpet time Ms. Jessica often sings Old McDonald. During the song the children love to remake the noises of the animals like oink, meow, moo, quack etc. While the toddlers play in free time I often saw the children say “Oink! Oink!” while playing with the toy pigs!
Do
I will do the following:
(Discuss/outline a clear beginning, middle and end of the experience including the set up/materials and facilitation methods.)
Set up: I will have the carpet area cleared with lots of space so when I begin the story they each have their own space. For the story time I have a book attached with finger puppets that have different colored pigs for each finger.
Beginning: In the beginning I will call over the toddlers to the library and ask for them to sit on the carpet. Once I notice the children have settled and are ready for the story I will ask the children if they know the story of ‘This Little Piggy’. I will then ask the children to join in if they know the story.
Middle: As I’m telling the story I will use the finger puppets to engage the toddlers attention and keep them drawn to the story. I will also make sure to use my voice as a tool and make sure to use emphasis
on certain words. I will also maintain a steady pace so the children can easily follow along and enjoy the story.
End: After the story is finished I will ask some questions like “What sound does a pig make? What colours are the pigs?”. I will then remind the children that they have 5 more minutes until we go outside! 1 of 2

This is how I will ensure full
inclusion of this activity so it can be experienced by all participating: I will ensure full inclusion by making sure to show each child the book as I go along as well as the puppet that matches. I will also make sure to use a loud and clear voice so that each child and follow along.
Learning Experience Reflection
To be completed
after
the implementation:
This form may be typed or handwritten.
Review & Reflect:
What went well?
The children were familiar of song and loved seeing the little piggy finger puppets.
What would you change?
For next story time I would have the props more interactive with the children, like something they could physically hold. I found that the children would try and touch the book or puppets often.
How would you follow up with other experiences?
To keep the interest going I would focus on pigs, like painting pigs or creating farm themed sensory bin.
This is what I learned:
a)
about the children’s development
I found that the children were more engaged when using a story that had a pattern and picked up the pattern very quickly through repetition. The children also tried to use their fingers like me and engaged not only cognitive development but fine motor as well.
b)
about the environment (as a third teacher)
The library area was a perfect space for this as it was spacious, cozy and simple where the children could easily focus on the story in front of them.
c)
about myself as an educator (supporting children)
I found myself getting more and more comfortable as I went through the story. I also found that as long as you’re having fun and smiling the children will feel that same energy.
