Discuss an example of a new communication or transportation technology which has “shrunk”
the world.
How has your example changed the network supply chain for products and what is
driving the innovation?
Class,
New communication and transportation technology has definitely “shrunk” the world. When I
joined the military and during my first deployment, I was only able to communicate with my
love ones with letters and by using phone cards to call home where we had to wait in line to be
able to dial in with a chance that possibly there was not going to be no one home as well as
having a 10 minute max limit. During this time I was single but I saw the frustration of those
with family back at home where sometimes it could be weeks between communications between
them and their families. Also with letters it will takes sometimes weeks and many times these
same letters won’t even make it home due to x or y reason. With technology advancements we
have witnessed the evolution of technology especially with smartphones which allows people to
connect instantly no matter the part of the world you are geographically located at. “Through
these smartphones, may tens of millions of users in the United States and worldwide can perform
an ever-expanding range of communications, networking, and consumption functions almost
instantly” (Neil., et al, 102). After this evolution I was not only able to communicate daily with
my family, but was able to purchase items online, pay my bills, conduct research and after I got
married I was even able to order my wife flowers to be delivered to her from over 6500 miles
away while I was deployed in Afghanistan. In addition to personal benefits, smartphones has
provided another advantage when it comes to the battlefield. “With military smartphones,
soldiers on the battlefield no longer rely exclusively on their military’s own reconnaissance
systems; soldiers are able to link into and leverage all existing surveillance systems on the
battlefield, ideally tapping into even those that belong to the enemy” (Wong, 2016). With these
advancements firms like Apple, Google and others have continued to innovate to add other
features like Face Time, Skype, Zoom, Cisco Webex Meetings and others; allowing not only to
message others but have face to face conversations. In the military for example we were able to
have virtual meetings with our teams located in different locations around the world like
different command post locations in Afghanistan, Qatar, Kuwait, and in the United States.
