Part II: Create a chart that demonstrates four ways that the TEKS and ELPS (2 TEKS and 2 ELPS) are aligned to the
recommendations below from the What Works Clearing House. In the third column, explain the connection between the
recommendation and the TEKS/ELPS.
Recommendation (R)
TEKS / ELPS
Explanation
Explicitly teach
strategies for planning
and goal setting,
drafting, evaluating,
revising, and editing.
TEKS
-6.10(A) plan a first draft by
selecting a genre appropriate
for a particular topic, purpose,
and audience using a range of
strategies such as discussion,
background reading, and
personal interests
6.10(C) revise drafts for
clarity, development,
organization, style, word
choice, and sentence variety
This practice is embedded in the TEKS in
several ways. Students are asked to complete
a first draft, and it clearly explains how
students will plan their writing and set goals
(select genre, purpose, audience). It goes
further to provide strategies to help students
plan their writing.
For the second TEKS, students are revising
their own work, and there is guidance to
support what students in this grade level are
focusing on for revising to improve their
writing.
ELPS
1B -Monitor language with
self-corrective techniques
5G -Narrate, describe, and
explain in writing
The first ELPS SE listed here explains how
students use self- correction. While this can
apply to reading or speaking, it also applies to
writing when students are editing. The second
ELPS applies because this encapsulates the
entire writing process.
