ADHD has started to become more and more common in children anymore. There could
be several potential reasons that this is the case some being as simple as population growth. If
more people are being diagnosed with ADHD than there is most likely more than just one reason
that this would be happening. Not everyone who is diagnosed may actually have ADHD,
previous and or parents who still have ADHD could pass it on to their children, technology today
can be much more interesting than school or what other people may have to say.
One of the reasons that there has been an increase in ADHD diagnoses would be that
some people that are diagnosed don’t even have ADHD. Sometimes the reasons that the people
who are being diagnosed may not actually have ADHD is because of their age and the fact that
their parents may not know how to deal with a very active young child or younger kid that is
uninterested in school or things like it. Because of this some parents may become easily
frustrated and take their child who may not be even 10 years old and get them diagnosed with
ADHD and sometimes even medicated because of it. Because ADHD is not something that can
be physically seen they only way to figure out if someone has it is normally through a series of
tests, which are not always the same for every person, so depending on the tests that someone
gets it may appear that they have ADHD when they would not have got those same results if the
test was different.
Another reason that there is an increase in diagnoses could be because of parents that did
have ADHD and have passed it down to one or more of their children who then could do the
same thing to their kids. ADHD is a has a estimated heritability of around 70% (Mortimer, 2021).
Since this disorder has such a high chance of being inherited by a genetic son or daughter, the
fact that there are so many more people being diagnosed with it should not be completely
shocking considering the population of the human race. But this is also why there can be so
many false cases of it because if a parent knows this then they might feel like because they had it
their kid definitely has it just because they will not listen to them or focus on homework. Even if
the parents had ADHD when they were growing up they will be stresses out in the same way as
other parents that are also experiencing ADHD from their children (Ringer 2020).
Technology is another factor as to why there has been more diagnosis lately. This is
because it tends to be more entertaining for children than schoolwork or reading for fun. Which
has led to many people allowing their young children to basically be brought up on the internet
and then when they can not access whatever they want to like YouTube or different games to
play they get bored easily and very restless which is very similar to ADHD but it does not mean
that they have ADHD. Some of the studies that have been done only show that people with
ADHD use the internet the same as everyone else but that they may be more vulnerable to
cyberbullying (Dawson,2019). While this is a good news bad news situation most of the time it is
just get on waste time because they are bored.
Increases in ADHD have happened for many reasons and will most likely continue to
happen because of things like population increase and technology. Because of the number of
