Game Journal: Frost Punk
What is the name of the game you chose to play?
I chose to play
Frost Punk
which is in the strategy genre.
Why did you pick that game and genre of game?
I chose
Frost Punk
because it's on gamepass and some content creators I enjoy have
played it.
Tell me what the pertinent details of the game are (I am interested to know what you think the
pertinent details are). Note: do not just write up the plot points for this section here unless it is an
important part of what you found interesting in the game.
Frostpunk
’s setting is a harsh and icy alternate history, where Earth was plunged into a
catastrophic winter in the late 19th century due to a series of volcanic eruptions. You take on the
role of the leader of a group of survivors who must establish and manage the last city on Earth in
an attempt to endure the unrelenting cold. The game's tone is harsh which comes across in the
unique mechanics and unforgiving environment. You have to balance the construction of a
steampunk-inspired city around a massive central generator, ensuring the survival and well-being
of the citizens. The generator serves as the primary heat source, and players must manage coal
and other resources to keep it operational. The temperature continuously drops drastically, and
you have to make crucial decisions, such as managing the workforce, researching technologies,
and enacting laws to maintain order, all while facing complex moral dilemmas. To survive you
may be forced to make immoral decisions like enacting child labor or authoritarian systems. This
ties gameplay back into the themes of fighting this harsh world however you can. The game's
stark and atmospheric visuals, combined with its strategic depth and moral decision-making,
make for a very thought-provoking experience.
What made the game fun? What got in the way of the fun?
I found that adding real time elements to a civilization based game, along with the bleak
tone, made for a much more realistic and engaging experience than similar games. Having to
balance labor felt like a uniquely grounded experience that due to its setting didn’t bog itself
down with complex diplomacy or combat. This system wouldn’t pack nearly the same punch
though if the game wasn’t as difficult as it was. You feel every second passing as you fight the
everpresent entropic winter. This stress allows for such catharsis when you are able to push back
the cold even a little. Making gains for your simulated civilization doesn’t feel like a natural
course of action as it does in many games of this type, it feels like a triumph of the collective
spirit of humanity.
And finally, have you played similar games before? If so, what made this game different from
other games you have played? If not, think of aspects of the game you chose that can be
