We are in a technology rich time. The use of digital technology is embedded in our everyday lives from our smart watches and smart cars to our Alexa and cell phones. The incorporation of advanced technology and game-based learning into the classroom is a logical progression. The emphasis is on increased engagement and interactivity with the material being presented. Interactive platforms, multimedia software, hands on activities, and interactive hardware have been found to increase student learning and engagement with their educational material, other students, and faculty (Frith, 2023). The is what educators are looking to improve. The greater the engagement in the classroom the more invested students become in learning and the better they perform (Martin & Bolliger, 2018). With the increase in digital and game-based learning comes additional distractions for the students and training needs for the educators. To incorporate digital game-based learning requires more than just plugging educational material into a digital format and calling it a game. The game must engage the students with other components like competition, rewards, and opportunities to advance. When using interactive activities, it is easy for students to get distracted especially when using personal devices like cell phones (Flanigan & Babchuk,
EDUC 730
2020). T
he temptation to switch to another web pages, answer texts, and check their social media while participating in an activity is real. Students believe they can multitask and do not always realize how many times they get distracted while engaging in a class activity on their personal devices (Pérez-Juárez et al., 2023). To help with this the instructor can use technology that indicates when a student leaves the activity. Another highly effective strategy is the instructor actively engaging with the students or walking around the room to view their engagement and progress. Keeping the student engaged in the activity can also be a challenge if there is too much downtime. The distractions are greater when the instructor is not prepared or does not know how the technology they are using works. Technical issue like internet outages aside educators
need to know what they are using and it should be prepared before the students start class to reduce distractions. Which is leads to the challenge many educators face which is the need to learn how to use the new technology and to keep up with the rapid changes and upgrades.
