Reflection:
Gary is a kind 6
th
grade male student. He struggles with spelling, reading and writing due to dyslexia. Gary is currently three grade levels behind in those above-mentioned subject areas. We carefully chose our applications to help Gary strengthen his skill using his areas of strength to ensure he can progress in a positive manner. We want Gary to still feel that he loves school and can love reading and writing, even though those specific subject areas are the toughest for him at school. Therefore, we have chosen to spend out allotted amount of money on apps we thought we would get the most out of. We want Gary to enjoy school so the money we spent reflects that ideal. Applications and tools we considered have gamified learning to make it fun. We also chose tools that should make these subject areas easier for Gary so that he does not feel like it is so difficult. We tried to buy a combination of both types of tools to ensure there was a variance in how we can best teach him. The activity is meant to include the tools and showcase how Gary’s skills will grow when we put these applications and technology to use in the classroom for him. The omoguru app specifically is designed to help him read, while Grammarly will help him apply those skills to writing. Omoguru was an easy selection due to its high praise and the minimum cost factor. These apps were selected based on reviews, Gary’s individual needs and our own experiences using these apps in classes of our own. With the help of these tools, we hope Gary will improve his reading fluency and accuracy to 80%. We also hope his informal writing will be legible on 4 out of 5 trials. These tools should also increase Gary’s ability to read sight words. These apps and strategies will work because each strategy and app is pinpointed to help
one of Gary’s weaknesses. We can help with the weaknesses, so Gary can rely on his strengths to continue his work through school in becoming a successful reader and writer. If we can improve Gary’s vocabulary through Grammarly, this will automatically help his writing and help him become a stronger reader.
