Prairie Restoration
1.
Based on what you have read so far about the U.S. prairies, write a summary of the history of its destruction.
o
When reading these articles and doing additional research, the U.S. Prairies, by the middle of the 20
th
century had all been destroyed due to extensive farming and
agricultural expansion. These causes have led the prairies to an alarming loss of habitat. T
he industrialization of farming practices and the urban expansion have fragmented these prairie ecosystems, further accelerating biodiversity loss. The 19th-century efforts in conservation were instrumental in recognizing the value of these landscapes, and still, the vastness of agriculture and industrial development overwhelmed these early undertakings causing destruction.
2.
What is a conservation prairie and what are compatible land uses for a conservation prairie?
o
According to the Nature Conservatory, a conservation prairie is designed to closely mimic native prairie using a seed mix that has many different native species adapted to the restoration site. Compatible land uses for a conservation prairie include:
Carefully managed grazing for habitat goals
Haying for habitat goals
Occasional seed harvest
Low-impact recreational activities
3.
What conservation benefits come from a conservation prairie? o
The conservation benefits that come from a conservation prairie are improved water quality, soil stabilization, and habitats for living things like birds, animals, and insects.
4.
After having read through the guidelines for restoring prairie at both websites, do you think it is a good idea to have a private landowner restoring prairie habitat? Why or why not?
o
I feel it is important and a good idea to have a private landowner restore prairie habitat because the prairies provide and support a wide diversity of life and habitats. It will decrease the rate of extinction due to the fact that many endangered and threatened species live on these prairies.
5.
Do you think private landowner prairie restoration will be successful in properly restoring
Midwestern prairies? Why or why not?
o
I think that private landowner’s prairie restoration has the opportunity and can be successful in properly restoring Midwestern prairies because of the benefits that will come out of it. As stated above these prairies are home to a lot of species including threatened and endangered and restoring them could lead to a decrease in extinction due to the recovery of the area.
