ENGR 115 L AB : E NERGY , P OWER , AND E FFICIENCY A SSIGNMENT I NSTRUCTIONS O VERVIEW Lab assignments are intended to give you some ‘hands-on’ experience in applying the concepts introduced in the course text. They are designed to get you out of your classroom or office and develop the skills of designing experiments and collecting data, and then performing calculations, evaluating the results, and communicating your findings. Labs are more than just number crunching – they are about reflecting on what is both practical and technically sound engineering problem-solving. For each problem below, address the scenario presented and develop engineering solutions. Communicate your results using drawings, pictures, and discussion, supported by calculations developed using the Microsoft Equation Editor or a similar tool. You are expected to show your work for unit conversions. Your solution to each question should be boxed and display proper units and significant figures as necessary. Be sure to check your solutions for magnitude and alternative solutions where applicable. Submit your lab report in a single pdf file uploaded to the location provided in Canvas before the due date/time indicated. Each problem should be treated as a micro-report with a problem statement, calculations/work shown to support your solution, and a conclusion/reflection on your findings. Lab Assignment Materials : Be sure to review these instructions in order to be aware of the materials you will need to complete this assignment. If you have trouble accessing any of the items for this assignemnt, contact your instructor. I NSTRUCTIONS 1. Visit a website of a photovoltaic module manufacturer such as SHARP and look up the following information for a new product: the wattage, dimensions, and weight. How many modules would be needed to provide 4000 kWh of electricity per year for where you live? How much would it cost for the array? Also, investigate the cost and types of batteries used in photovoltaic systems to store energy to be used during cloudy days. Present your findings in a brief report. 2. Investigate the typical power consumption range of the following products and discuss your findings in a brief report: a. home refrigerator b. 40-inch television set c. clothes washer d. electric clothes dryer e. vacuum cleaner f. hair dryer Page 1 of 2
ENGR 115 3. What type of batteries are used by most electric vehicles (EV). How and where are the minerals and elements mined to make these batteries? What is a typical life span and cost of an EV battery? What is the longest range and battery pack energy rating for EVs’ on the market? Present your findings in a brief report. 4. Investigate the current cost ($/kWh) of generating electricity using wind power. Compare it to the cost of electricity provided by the electric company in your area. Note: Your assignment will be checked for originality via the Turnitin plagiarism tool. Page 2 of 2
