1 AI Critique: Romantic Relationship Trauma and Possible Applied Solutions Alex Heffner EDUC 181 Professor Dr. Dana Riger April 10, 2023
2 Rationale Can romantic relationship trauma lead to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and are there any ways in which people can overcome this? I don’t know at the moment, but an answer may be provided with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI). I selected this topic because I feel that my past romantic relationships still affect my everyday mental health, and acquiring answers will be beneficial in terms of maintaining a positive outlook on life. I chose to use ChatGPT because the AI model has recently gained recognition for its many functions and ability to answer questions. By relaying questions related to ChatGPT about my topic, I am hopeful that I will be provided with new knowledge that I can apply to myself. Output Trauma in a romantic relationship can include physical or sexual abuse, emotional abuse or neglect, infidelity, or other forms of betrayal. Furthermore, in a study conducted within the United States Healthline organization, it was found that relationship trauma can develop as a result of harmful relationships, and the aftermath can be psychologically and physically devastating (Dexter, 2022). PTSD is a mental health condition that can develop in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. Symptoms of PTSD can include flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, avoidance behavior, and heightened anxiety or arousal (Sareen, 2014). Psychologists from the National Library of Medicine announced that people who have developed PTSD from a relationship may also struggle with intrusive symptoms like thoughts about the trauma or relationship that seem to come out of nowhere and flashbacks in the form of mental images, intrusive thoughts, and nightmares (Dehgali, 2011). To overcome PTSD resulting from romantic relationship trauma, it is important to seek professional help from a therapist who specializes in trauma and PTSD.
3 Therapy can help individuals process their experiences, develop coping strategies, and learn to manage symptoms. Some specific therapies that are effective for PTSD include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and prolonged exposure therapy (Dehgali, 2011). These therapies can help individuals identify and challenge negative thought patterns, desensitize themselves to triggers related to their trauma, and develop new ways of coping with their emotions (Schrader, Ross, 2021). In addition to therapy, self-care practices such as exercise, mindfulness, and connecting with supportive friends and family can also help manage PTSD symptoms. Moreover, researchers at the Very Well Health organization have found that emotion-focused coping techniques like meditation, journaling, and art can be most beneficial to the emotional response to situations you can't control as desensitization is a key component of recovery (Catlett, Brito, 2021). It is important to remember that recovery from PTSD is a journey and may take time, but with the right support and resources, it is possible to overcome the effects of romantic relationship trauma (Smith, 2023). Questions Those that resulted in the most nuanced, accurate, and comprehensive output: What is PTSD? Is trauma from a past romantic relationship a real thing? What are the best ways to overcome relationship PTSD? Those that resulted in inaccurate, misleading, or biased output: What causes relationship PTSD? Do most people experience trauma from their past romantic relationships?
