Forsab 1 Princess Forsab Professor Lopez English 1302 2 March 2024 Should Homework be Banned? Why or why Not? Homework should not be banned because it is a crucial component of education, serving as a bridge between in-class instruction and independent learning. For as long as I can remember, it has been a necessary component of education, and there is a lot of discussion over whether or not it is beneficial. Yet, when we look more closely, it is clear to see that homework is more than just completing worksheets or essays. It is an important tool for improving our development of essential skills, communication and feedback, and a reinforcement of learning. Homework does more than just add time to our school day; it provides students with the skills necessary to succeed in college and beyond. Despite growing calls for its removal, advocating for a ban on homework does not outweigh the advantages it offers students. In the educational landscape, learning reinforcement is significantly aided by homework, giving students valuable opportunities to apply and solidify the concepts introduced in the classroom. Research indicated that “the average high school student doing homework outperformed 69 percent of the students in a class with no homework” (Crawford), underscoring the value of assignments in improving academic achievement. Students are able to strengthen their comprehension through practical problem-solving by applying their acquired knowledge to homework assignments. Additionally, when students go through assignments on their own, homework promotes critical thinking and active learning, leading to a higher level of understanding. Moreover, homework assignments frequently include a variety of tasks and
Forsab 2 projects that accommodate different methods of learning, meeting students' varying requirements and promoting a deeper comprehension of the subject matter. Therefore, homework is essential for enhanced learning and supporting students' understanding of academic materials. Homework is an effective utilization of resources for students to interact with their teachers and peers, facilitating a collaborative approach to learning. For instance, “homework assignments allow teachers to evaluate student understanding and provide suggestions on areas where improvement is needed” (Gupta). Teachers can assess their students' comprehension and pinpoint areas where additional clarification or assistance is required by assigning homework. They can further evaluate each student's performance and adjust their lesson by going over their completed assignments. Furthermore, this makes it possible for teachers to intervene quickly, identifying students who struggle with a specific topic and clearing up any misunderstandings or issues. Additionally, homework offers a chance for peer review, feedback, and collaboration (Gupta). Assignments that involve peer feedback and review allow students to interact constructively with the work of their classmates, which promotes collaboration and deepens their learning. As a result, students increase their knowledge while developing their communication and analytical abilities when they provide their peers with honest and helpful criticism. Lastly, cooperative learning and teamwork are fostered through group homework assignments; these attributes are the key to success in both academic and professional environments. Team assignments boost the learning process by encouraging the exchange of ideas, joint problem- solving, and sharing perspectives among students. The multifaceted advantages of homework offer learners the development of essential skills that prepare them for future success. According to a recent LinkedIn article by Amaal Al- Halwachi, homework stimulates self-discipline, time management, and responsibility (Al-
Forsab 3 Halwachi). Homework cultivates responsibility by assigning tasks for completion independently and within specific timeframes. These assignments help students develop self-direction and dedication, essential abilities for success in various pursuits. Coursework also helps students develop their time management skills by teaching them to prioritize tasks, use their time wisely, and meet deadlines continuously. Balancing several assignments and other duties teaches fundamental multitasking abilities that are both useful in professional and educational settings. Furthermore, completing school work demands constant attention and drive, especially under challenging circumstances such as having a job or familial obligations, facilitating the growth of self-discipline, which is vital for overcoming obstacles, staying organized, and achieving long- term goals. Although homework certainly has its merits, it is crucial to recognize its potential drawbacks. For many students and parents, homework strains family relationships due to time- consuming frustrations, particularly affecting low-income students lacking resources. It also detracts from essential non-academic activities and leisure time, crucial for students' well-being (Gale). To address these issues, a thorough approach is necessary. Prioritizing homework that is suitable, pertinent, and in line with students' learning objectives is an action that educators ought to do. A few suggested solutions include providing a variety of assignments to accommodate different learning styles and ensuring that everyone has equitable access to resources. To fully support every student, schools should establish fair homework regulations. Establishing a balance between education and other responsibilities requires collaboration with families. To ensure that homework continues to be beneficial, it is important to maintain open lines of communication among teachers, parents, and students.
