Garrett Croft Dr. Patterson ENG 111-OL4 October 26, 2020 Discourse Community Essay Out of the many discourse communities I belong to, the one I find myself surrounded by the most is the Christian religion. The Christian religion, or Christian church, is an organization of individuals who worship The God whose name is Yahweh. This organization finds its core values and rules within its designated text, The Holy Bible. This community is significant to my family and I as it is the core foundation upon which we build our lives. We incorporate the set of beliefs that belong to this community into our daily lives and learn from its text. The Christian church is a multi-cultural, global, non-discriminatory organization that is open to any and all who want to join. In this exploration of the Christian religion I will uncover how this community functions as well as what makes this community unique. The Christian religion is a community that is claimed by many. This community is open to every individual from any demographic. The member of this community refers to themselves as a few different titles. These titles include Christian, believer, child of God, and Christ follower. There are also different denominations to the Christian religion; however, I do not belong to any of them. I consider myself a nondenominational, Bible believing Christian. This means I do not follow any culture specific rules, I only follow The Bible and its teaching. The Christian religion communicates with one another through various different vices. These include sermons, where the close proximity of Christians gathers and listen to a pastor teach on biblical principles. Another form of communication would be a group setting that is smaller and more Croft 1
intimate. I personally belong to one of these groups. In this setting we gather and read the Bible together then digest the reading. This group is a personal group that is considered a safe place to talk about personal issues without any shame or condemnation. There are several different rules to the Christian religion, almost too many to list. However, there are two specific commandments from which the Christian church builds its foundation. “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”(Matthew 22:37-40) In this scripture the Christ, Jesus, calls the Christians to love God first, then to love others. This is the foundation of the Christian faith. The language for the Christian religion is no different than any other community, despite a few unique terms. These terms include gospel, sanctification, and evangelize. The Gospel is an all-encompassing story of The Christ. It starts with the prophetic visions all the way to the death and resurrection. It is the “good news” of the son of God, who was created as an ultimate sacrifice to bear the weight of world’s sin, past present, and future, so that we as humans might gain entrance into heaven. “When Christians use the word sanctification, they are referring to the progressive work of God to make a believer more like Jesus Christ”(Christianity.com) Christians are God’s chosen people and are set apart to be different from the rest of the world, that is what makes sanctification so important. “To evangelize is to proclaim the good news of the victory of God’s salvation” (biblestudytools.com) Evangelization is the act of sharing your beliefs with another. In a sense, this exploration of the Christian religion can be considered evangelical. The Christian church interacts with the community in several different ways. At Biltmore Church, one of our core values is “embrace the mission”(Biltmorechurch.com) This means that Croft 2
