USII.7b The student will apply social science skills to understand the major causes and effects of American involvement in World War II by locating and describing the major events and turning points of the war in Europe and the Pacific
Description of the Strategy
Exit slips are a form of informal assessment that educators can use after reading (Reading
Rockets, n.d.). This strategy works by the educator giving students a prompt after reading. Before the end of class, students answer the prompt and turn it in. This is a great strategy because
educators can collect important data such as if a student is comprehending, if a student is thriving with the type of instruction given or the prompt can overall emphasize the process of learning (Reading Rockets, n.d.). By utilizing exit slips, educators are able to see what students are comprehending, what they may be struggling with or what needs additional time to be revisited (Bosco, 2021, p. 53). Since exit slips target comprehension and retention, they are typically given individually, but may also be completed in a small or whole group setting. Instructional Components and Implementation Plan
For this assignment, I will be focusing on the second part of the standard, which is
“
locating and describing the major events and turning points of the war in Europe and the Pacific.” To do this, I will be using the book
Tales of World War II: Amazing True Stories from the War that Shook the World by Dr. Hattie Hearn and Neon Squid. Since there are so many events that took place in the Pacific Theatre, this book is perfect because it has over one hundred true but short stories. We will read aloud the chosen story in a whole group setting and students will again be broken up into a small group setting based upon their comprehension and overall proficiency to peer share about what the text made them think, feel or learn. Students who are English Language Learners (ELLs) will be partnered with a student who is identified as gifted/talented or otherwise has a stronger proficiency and comprehension skills in the class. For my students with IEPs for comprehension issues will also be paired with a gifted/talented student as well. My students who have IEPs due

to behavioral issues will be partnered with myself or my co-teacher to ensure they are on track and focusing. All students with IEPs will be given extended due dates to turn in their slips if needed. This strategy has to be done at the conclusion of reading, so once students have discussed their thoughts on the chosen text with their peer partner, they will return to their seats and the prompt will be passed out. The prompt that they will be answering is “what were the major turning points in the Pacific theater and how did the stories read aloud help you form your answer?” Students in eighth grade are not learning about World
War II or the Pacific Theatre for the first time.By asking this specific question,. I am drawing on both background knowledge, but also asking students to support their answers with information found in the te;xt. Text Application
