Centers for Disease Information on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Student Sarah Rainey College Name, Grand Canyon University Course Number: ENG-105 Dr. Rebecca Foy August 20, 2023 Introduction In the world today many children and adults suffer from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. In most cases this condition can go unnoticed, untreated, and sometimes undetectable in many people. The Centers for Disease Center created a webpage for the public, mainly parents and teachers, to get more information about Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The Centers for Disease Control website is a credible source because it is a government funded and run organization. They have paid professional scientists who run studies and try to find facts on each disease they publish on their site. The CDC has given the symptoms, treatments, and possible causes for attention-deficit disorder. For the CDC to accurately relay information to the general public who are wanting to know more about ADHD, the CDC uses rhetoric tools such as ethos, pathos, and logos.
Audience and Purpose The Center for Diseases Control’s purpose for this essay is to inform the public, mainly parents, about Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is very common, and most people are able to function without the use of medicine. Most people are probably walking around with high functioning ADHD and do not even know they have it. Many adults have it and have gone undiagnosed, this is what you would call high functioning ADHD. The purpose of this article is to inform and educate those who are concerned their child might be suffering from ADHD and even find answers on how to deal with it. The article gives information on the disorder, as well as who to contact if you want more information or a diagnosis. The website lists symptoms, diagnoses, and possible treatments. The CDC uses three appeals in this article, which are ethos, logos, and pathos. Ethos The Center for Disease Control effectively uses ethos on their website about ADHD. Ethos is an appeal to the credibility or character of the speaker or writer (Grand Canyon University [GCU], 2015) The Center for Disease Control is a credible source because they are federally funded by the government, and relay information to the public about all matters regarding disease. The CDC has been funded by the government since 1946. “The CDC is a major operating component for the Department of Health ( “Our History”,2018).” The Center for Disease control website was created to inform the masses and give information on all diseases nationwide.
Logos Logos is the appeal to logic or reasoning of the intended audience (GCU, 2015). On the website for the Center for Disease Control it states that in addition to genetics, they are researching other factors which may cause ADHD and the affects it can have on a child and their families. They are looking into other risk factors such as a brain injury or premature delivery (CDC,2018). The website gives other vital information on risk factors not involved in the causes of ADHD. On their webpage on ADHD the Center for Disease Control gives the symptoms that might present in someone with ADHD and the treatments that can be taken to lessen symptoms of the disease. Pathos Pathos is a rhetorical appeal that the CDC utilizes on their website about ADHD. Pathos is an appeal to emotions or emotional disposition of the audience (GCU,2015). When creating this webpage, the CDC remained impartial and only put out the facts of said disease. The webpages were specifically made to give information about ADHD. They use this specific appeal by reaching the intended audience. They do this by using emotion, they express that this is something that occurs in childhood and it is something that will never go away or something that can be grown out of. On one of the webpages they show a man using sign language, this can be conveyed to parents as being empathetic to the situation.
