After Action Assessment, Essay #2
1. Strengths:
One of the areas of strength I am doing well in is creating a thesis and organizing my ideas to support the thesis. The thesis statement was concise and clear. I organized the supporting ideas in the essay through my research, and conveyed those points to the reader. The body of the essay contained all the points that where outlined in the introduction. Topic sentences introduced each paragraph and were then developed in the body of the paragraph. As I stated in my last after action assessment, one of the important aspects is to identify strong points is to continue to keep these points up to the level attained and continue to improve upon them. I believe with this essay I achieved this goal. Additionally, I made strides in improving my conclusion, an area identified as needing improvement. 2. Areas of improvement:
During the peer review and after submitting my final draft it has been brought to my attention that my writing style could use some polishing. I could use a style more appropriate to the subject I am writing about. Although a writer wants to avoid using technical jargon in an essay, some ideas in the paper might require an explanation or more detailed description so the reader has a better understanding of the idea. An important question I can ask myself is: will a reader with no knowledge of this subject understand what I am trying to convey?
Although the body of the essay contained all the points that where outlined I could have explained some of the concepts better for the reader. My use of quotes, paraphrases, and cites had a few minor errors and needs to follow MLA format. The flow of the essay was better than previous essays with better written transitions paragraph to paragraph. I found that reading the essay out loud helped improve the flow because I could hear how a reader would hear it and adjust it when it was not smooth.
Additionally, I reviewed paragraphs separately to see if they fully developed the topic sentence. I received some good advice during peer review and applied it to write a good conclusion for this paper. I will continue to work on conclusions so that they become easier to write.
I made improvements in the use of MLA citation style there is room for improvement. Specifically, in text citations were a problem for me in this essay. I maintained a good balance of sources used, paraphrasing some of the sources. I will need to continue to review citing as I continue to become more comfortable using this method. I did make use of the APUS resources section under the library, writing @ APUS, which enabled me to improve my writing style. I also made use of the Perdue OWL website as a reference when writing my paper.

3. Lesson and Homework Plan:
An area where I can continue to improve in is citations. While I am still not comfortable with creating my own citations from the work I use, I did create my own citations for this paper using the Perdue OWL
website as a guide, https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/675/1. This site has an overview and a
guide to MLA formats for most sources. I am continuing to practice writing citations in MLA format at: http://www.wwnorton.com/college/english/write/writesite/citation_practice_drills/
citation_practice_drills.aspx
. I did not meet my plan is to spend twenty minutes a day practicing creating
citations, but the additional homework I did do has shown in my work improving. Continued practice in addition to double checking the citations I create in my papers with the Owl site will help me to master this vital aspect of writing. Another area of improvement is in the essay structure and my use of the MLA format and how sources are used in my paper. A technique I added to my writing process was conducting several reviews
of the paper. This technique was successful in ensuring that the essay flowed smoothly, and the development of the topic idea of each paragraph. One review to cover MLA format and the use of sources in the paper to ensure that proper format has been used. One review to cover the conclusion and ensure that the main ideas are summed up and that it provokes though in the reader. Use of the Final Product section under the writing@APUS, http://www.apus.edu/online-library/resources-
services/student-academic-resource-center/writing-center.html
, as a guideline for my reviews helped. Both these techniques have proven beneficial to my writing and I will continue to use them in future writing assignments.
4. Progress Made:
In the review my use of the MLA format continues to need improvement. Since then I will continue to
spend time practicing at http://www.wwnorton.com/college/english/write/writesite/citation_practice_drills/
citation_practice_drills.aspx
. This site allows me to create citations from examples and then submit them for immediate correction. This has helped me to hone my skill but additional work on this is necessary. Additionally, continuing to double check my format at the Perdue Owl page will help me to use the correct format. The exercises have helped but continued practice will be the key to completely mastering the skill.
Writing is a process and to improve as a writer is continually evolving process. I have found that some
of the same problem areas from the last paper, although there was improvement, resurfaced in this one. The steps I have outlined above are a good way to improve my writing skill but I have learned from this course that assessing and reevaluating my writing process is the key to improving it.
