4 Topic: Instructional Strategies: Grammar And Writing DQ1: Consider your grammar and writing education in elementary school. What methods of instruction did you find most beneficial? Why were these methods most beneficial for you? Good day, class and Professor Hallner. I hope you are all doing fantastic. I am getting ready for spring break, which is a much-needed break, to be honest! Although I won’t go anywhere, I will be busy studying for my Praxis and chilling with my son and husband at home. Thinking back to my grammar and writing education in elementary school, it was tough to recall. First, it has been a while, and second, I cannot remember my teachers teaching me grammar or writing skills. This makes me sad because they did not impact me, and although I can speak and write correctly, how did I learn? When I taught English as a Second Language (ESL) in Mexico, I had blocks of time dedicated to Reading, Spelling, Grammar, and Writing. The school stressed the importance of being separated into blocks; honestly, the students knew the grammar rules and how to speak proper English well. As students learn grammar rules, they can improve their reading comprehension, critical thinking, and analytical skills. By understanding how words and sentences are structured, students can explore text themes, meanings, and patterns (Woodford, 2023). Teaching grammar and writing should be fun, engaging, and meaningful. Many strategies exist for teaching grammar and writing, such as videos, graphic organizers, and games like Grammatical Go Fish (3 Tips to Teach Grammar in Elementary School - Studentreasures Blog 2022). FluentU English. https://www.fluentu.com/blog/english/english-grammar-importance/ DQ2: What are methods are currently used in an elementary classroom to teach and assess spelling? How effective are those methods, and how is effectiveness measured? I have seen teachers write the words 5 times, draw a picture, and have a spelling test at the end of the week. This method is ineffective; students are not being taught; they are being assigned spelling tests on Friday. Some effective methods to teach spelling are assigning related words, such as diphthongs and digraphs. Teachers can create word search puzzles for students. Practice activities like these can be used to reinforce spell patterns that have been explored previously. Playing games like Hopscotch, which incorporates movement, is among the most popular. Using a small object, students toss it into the first square and hop through the remaining squares in the pattern. Ask them to spell a word that contains the focused spelling pattern if they stepped on the lines or lost their balance (Williams-Pinnock, 2023) . Having more hands-on activities can help students remember spelling rules and spelling. References Williams-Pinnock, S. K. (2023, February 22). 11 ways to boost elementary students’ spelling skills .
