How to write A Formal Report, including the Executive Summary, for Part 5 of the Assessment Task BSBHRM417. Generally reports are written in Third person language. Do not use “I will or I found” Examples of how to write in third person are found below. Reports can use headings within the report to clearly identify changes in topic or ideas. The report template gives you major headings but don’t be afraid to use dot points or smaller headings within these sections to make information clearer to the reader . It also helps the writer keep on track. Executive Summary
The Executive Summary is a brief overview of :
1.
What the focus of the report is about.
2.
Why the report was written (what prompted the research) 3.
How the research was conducted 4.
What the findings were and 5.
The recommendations arising from the findings. Write your executive summary last, so you know what you’ve covered in the report. Please watch the video How do I write One? Found at the following link Executive summaries (unimelb.edu.au)
Introduction
Formal reports are written to share information to key stakeholders about a particular issue. The purpose of this report is to provide CIV HR students with information that is useful to complete formal reports throughout the course and in particular the BSBHRM417 Project Task 5. Information will be provided on the layout of the document , the purpose of headings, and use of formal language (third person ), the use of research to support the findings, and to assist with identifying recommendations to address the identified issues. 1

Current Situation In this section you are writing about information from the case study and from the policies you have identified in Section 2 of this overall assessment - What is happening ? What are the trends you have identified ? What do you think could be barriers (issues that are stopping the implementation of the policies, impacting staff in a negative way, causing unhappiness etc)
Analysis Once you have identified the information from the case study and the data you have collected from your survey, you need to present this as findings . Highlight similarities and differences in the information that you have . It may also be is useful to compare it to similar results found in research from other companies or sources you identified in Task 1.2. Doing the research at this stage of the report will help you identify issues of Bounce but also give you ideas about recommendations you could make to improve the practices at Bounce Fitness (in the final sections of the report.) An example :
It was identified that 30% of respondents indicated a dissatisfaction with working in others since the return to work post COVID lockdowns. Similar findings have been identified in research conducted for the Australian Human Resources Institute. “
Mental health remains a struggle for many Australian workers, but dealing with people has become the biggest challenge workers are facing
.” (The Wellbeing Lab, 2021) Information from the research you complete forms a useful basis to identify recommendations for improvement by Bounce Fitness to address the concerns of their staff. An example of this might be :
Areas of positive response
Data gathered from the survey indicated that participants were extremely satisfied with …..
Areas requiring further investigation.
The gathered data indicated that 30% of the respondents were dissatisfied with the level of resources provided for staff welfare… Conclusion
Formal reports are not difficult to write. Use short sentences and be clear about the information you are sharing . If you make a statement it is good to support the idea with an example or reference another source that supports (or contradicts) your idea. Recommendations
Write in dot points
Make sure the recommendations focus on the issues identified in your survey data.
Be specific about the actions that are needed to address the issues or barriers you have identified , who needs to action them and the timeframe for them to be implemented. Bibliography
A bibliography is the list of sources you used to gather ideas and information you have used in the report. It is not just a list of places you “quoted” ideas from . It is every source of information you read to gather ideas. All assessments need bibliographies - even those where you are only using the information form the Student Workbook or the TDC platform. 2
