1 Romantic Comedy Genre Arianne Machgan The University of Arizona Global Campus ENG 225: Introduction to Film Nathan Stewart December 4, 2023
2 Romantic Comedy Genre Genre theory categorizes films by how they are studied. Genre theory has a lot of different elements. In a movie, the genre theory is picked by the setting, lighting, the plot of the story, and the audience's perspective. People pick what movie they want to watch by genre. They can have a good idea about what movie they are going to watch before the movie even starts by the genre category. The subgenres of a film can help an audience pick what kind of movie they expect to see. The romantic comedy genre can subgenres with drama, action, teen comedy, screwball comedy, and romantic comedy, “which attempts to bring two people together in the end (Goodykoontz et al., 2019). The romantic comedy Jerry Maguire adds drama that expands the genre with a contemporary outlook that adults in real life face today. Jerry Maguire falls under the romantic comedy category with a drama subgenre. The storyline plot of the romantic comedy leads you through all the emotions of drama. The film's plot is Jerry Maguire, a sports agent who is full of himself. He is the best agent at his firm, and he has a beautiful fiancé who is wild. In the middle of the night, he decided to write a mission statement that he was congratulated on, but he ended up being fired because of the information. Jerry had to start over by having only Dorothy Boyd, who also left the same job because his statement inspired her, and she saw something in him. Jerry was able to leave his career with only one loyal client, Rod Tidwell, the NFL player. Dorothy and Jerry’s relationship started to become sexual, but Jerry has a past that repeats itself of him not wanting to be alone. A series of events throughout the movie shows the convention of a romantic comedy with drama. The two significant conventions in Jerry Maguire's movie fall under the primary genre of romantic comedy. Rafael said in his article, “Genre conventions are elements, themes, topics, tropes, characters, situations, and plot beats” (2022). In the movie, Jerry and Rod repeat the
3 saying, “Show me the money,” which brings out the comedy genre and shows the connection between the two characters. This phrase is repeated throughout the series of events. In one scene after Jerry got fired, he was on the phone with Rob, doing everything he could to convince Rob to keep him as his agent. Rod was not giving in easily and kept telling him he was not respected and was living in a house that was falling apart. Jerry screamed, “Show me the money,” while Rob was dancing and laughing (Scene City, 2021). Rob was making Jerry work really hard to stay his agent. Rob liked Jerry; Jerry was friendly to his wife and son, and family was essential to Rod. The convention that falls under the romance genre is that Dorothy wanted a father for her son; she would see families together and fathers with their sons, and she would be sad because she didn’t have that for her son. Her son's father died and was not the best man. In one scene, Jerry comes to get Dorothy on a date, and her Son tells Jerry he loves him and hugs him like a father (Little_chris_rm, 2019). The movie Jerry Maguire falls under romantic comedy as the main genre. The subgenre is comedy-drama. At the beginning of the film, Jerry is having a crisis about his life and what it means to him. He wanted to do more for his clients and give them personal time with the agent, like family. In the middle of the night, he decided to write a mission statement that his boss disagreed with. He went from having everything to losing his job, breaking up with his girlfriend, and only having one client. Jerry and Dorothy unexpectedly hooked up after one date. In conclusion, having different genres helps people know what storyline they want to watch. The romantic comedy attempts to bring two people together, and this movie end with that happening. The guy becomes successful in his career in his own business and rushes home to win back the girl. Jerry Maguire (1996) followed romantic comedies with lighting and situations in them. The movie had Jerry, a sports agent, who helped expand the audience to not just
