Thesis: While studying the film Back to the Future,
using the lens of genre theory, I saw great auteurs in this film
through techniques of cinematography, lighting, and movement of the camera, using the one-motion movement that captures the fantasy that draws your attention. Final Film Critique: Back to the Future
The movie Back to the Future
is a science fiction genre with comedy and adventure as the subgenre, and it was directed by Robert Zemeckis, who co-wrote with Bob Gale in 1985. In Back to the Future,
Doc Brown, played by Christopher Lloyd, builds a
time-traveling machine made out of his DeLorean car. Doc
calls his friend Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox, to help him record his first try at time traveling.
The DeLorean needs to reach 1.21 gigawatts of energy to time travel, and the car must reach 85 mph or a faster speed to time travel. Doc Brown used plutonium to make the car reach the 1.21 gigawatts that was needed, which he took from a group of terrorists Libyan. The group of Libyans showed up at the location where Marty met Doc Brown, and they killed Doc Brown. Doc Brown was about to start his time-
traveling journey when he was killed. Marty runs from the group and jumps into the DeLorean time machine, and the terrorists chase him around through the mall parking lot they are at. Marty then sets the time machine to five minutes past, hoping to save Doc Brown's life by warning him ahead of time. Marty set the time machine to 1955 by accident. When the DeLorean reached the speed of 88mph, he traveled to
1955 and found himself in Hill Valley. Marty lost control of the car and ran the DeLorean into a barn. Marty learns that DeLorean used up all the plutonium to return to save Doc Brown in 1985. Marty finds the past Doc Brown that is living in 1955, and tells him what happened. To make things worse, Marty runs into his mom, who is played by Lea Thompson as Lorraine Baines and interferes with his mom falling in love with his dad, who is played by Crispin Glover as George McFly. He has changed the past and can jeopardize his future of being born. Through many challenges, Marty could fix the errors he made in 1955 and figure a way to get back to 1985. Marty and Doc Brown hocked the DeLorean time

machine to the clock tower in the middle of the town, and the lighting from the rain storm gave Marty the power needed to return to 1985. Marty was able to return in time to see the terrorist kill Doc Brown and the DeLorean time machine take off and disappear. Marty runs to Doc Brown to find Doc alive because Doc Brown found the letter he had left for him in 1955, and it saved his life. Marty and Doc Brown say goodbye as Doc Brown starts his journey to the future. After Marty returned home in 1985, things were different. Marty’s Father changed and became a successful writer, and his father’s bully, Biff, who is played by Thomas F. Wilson, now works for him. Marty and his girlfriend were looking at the new truck that Marty’s parents had surprised him with, and the DeLorean showed up out of nowhere with Doc Brown. Doc Brown jumps out of the DeLorean and tells Marty they need to return to the future.
Body Paragraph 1:
Applying the Formalist/Genre/Auteur Theory
Back to the Future
is a science fiction genre movie. The movie has drama and much action, but the main genre is classified as science fiction. The movie Back to the Future
was centered on time travel and the events that took place. In the scene where Marty tries to save his friend Doc Brown from being killed, he ends up by accident in 1955. In 1955, Marty is trying to get back to 1985 and falls into some problems he must fix before returning. ‘This movie may signify a model of time travel storytelling in the mode of candid popular literature, forceful mainstream version of this odd and characteristic subgenre of science (Wittenberg, 2012)
Body Paragraph 2:
Name of Technique & Design Element
The look of the scene comes from the cinematography. Bring the connection of light and dark together to the background and other elements that create the image. The cinematographer’s job is to explain the vision of the direction with respect to the film, capture what the director is trying to convey, and make it physically happen (Goodykoontz et al. 2019). Cinematography is about mise en scene, which means putting the scene together. The lighting, color, framing, the camera, and the lenses, including the focus on
everyone in the scene. The key part of this movie is the mise en scene that brings the theme together. One
