Rhetorical Analysis Outline I. Introduction Hook – Are you pro-life or pro-choice? Work and Author – Claudia Dreifus' opinion article "I almost died trying to get an abortion. I'm terrified my students could face a similar fate." Article Thesis: Abortion should be legalized because women have the right to their bodies. My thesis: The argument is convincing because the author effectively utilized ethos, pathos, and logos in the article. II. Summary Paragraph Thesis: Women should have the right to do what they want to their bodies legally. In my second year at college, I became pregnant. This was a decade before legalization. At first, I tried to self-abort with various home remedies. None worked. In one attempt -- which involved overdosing on a drug rumored to be an abortifacient -- I nearly died. I was 19. One of the most infamous cases of the period where an Arizona television presenter,   Sherri Finkbine, had accidentally taken the fetus-deforming drug thalidomide while in the early stages of a pregnancy. When Finkbine sought an abortion at the local hospital, it was denied. She had to fly to Sweden for the operation. III. Analysis Paragraph I
In the article, Dreifus (2021) successfully builds her integrity using appeals to ethos by indicating her first-hand experience relating to the argument. Supporting details: Dreifus is a woman who personally experienced a situation wherein illegally aborting almost killed her. Provide Dreifus' personal experience regarding abortion. 1973 Roe Vs. Wade IV. Analysis Paragraph II Next, Dreifus (2021) effectively evokes sympathy and empathy throughout her article by appealing to pathos.  Restate her personal experience and why it is to be remembered. State the other real-life experiences provided in the article that relates to the argument. V. Analysis Paragraph III Lastly, Dreifus (2021) effectively shows logic and reason throughout her article by appealing to logos.  The valid reasons why women need to be able to have an abortion legally. Definition of pro-life and pro-choice. Nullifying the 1973   Roe v. Wade   decision = limiting women's reproductive rights. VI. Concluding Paragraph Ethos – author’s first-hand experience of the argument presented. Pathos – sympathy, and empathy which are based on facts.
