Makeda Ziegler University of Arizona Global Campus ENG 225: Introduction to Film
Professor Allison Hall
Due date: 05/23/2022
The director Ryan Coogler is known mostly for directing the Black Panther series, Creed and Fruitvale Station. He is an African American filmmaker and producer coming from Oakland, Ca.
Ryan Coogler's first film was Fruitvale Station, which won the top audience and grand jury awards in the U.S. dramatic competition at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. He has many of awards such as Independent Spirit Award for best first feature, the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding directing in motion picture and many more to name. Ryan Coogler went to Sacramento University of Southern California and earned a BA. While he attended USC School of Cinematic Arts, he directed four films and three of them won and were nominated for various awards. He works as a film director, screenwriter, and producer, who is also been married since 2016. Coogler recently signed to Disney to produce content for them such as a .series based on Black Panther's home country of Wakanda.
Auteur theory can briefly be described as the director being like the author or writer of the movie. A movie fulfills this theory if a lot of elements, like camera placement, blocking, lightening, and scene length convey the message of the firm. The first movie that I picked is Fruitvale Station. The message behind the film Fruitvale Station is based on a true story. Oscar
didn't deserve to die. The film dramatizing the real life case of Oscar Grant being a unarmed black man who was shot in the back by a police officer that is white. It is a very touchy common message that is often talked about in real life and movies. It is cut between two shots exactly where the characters are positioned and maintains the illusion that is happening throughout the shot in different places but same timing. The director of that movie fulfills the auteur theory because Ryan Coogler was very creative on catching event by implementing public records and findings from the news into a story. Coogler paid attention closely with public records, new articles, and even got close to Oscar family to gather information to piece together to create events he put in the movie. Most of the scenes in the movie is true to those events as we can be sure of them.
The auteur theory also briefly explain the modern vision of Rocky. There's a majestic, bitter irony to Creed, stirring, heartwarming and insightful new vision of the Rocky films. After all being cornered with exploring different plot-lines and the movie nevertheless exhibit a distinct casuistic pattern, which is how Coogler should go about ensuring that he will appeal the audiences. The director gets a bit creative based on the auteur theory, there is a young man Adonis Johnson Creed attempts to follow his father's footsteps. His father died in the ring in 1980s by the hand of Russian pugilist Ivan Drago, which made Adonis to grow up without a dad
and forcing him to become a man. The director turn the story into a very much a personal and passionate film. from a single position with different distances that affected the film in a major way. using other technique's like racking focus where certain characters or props may be in sharp
focus and others may be blurred help generate the right feelings for the scene.
