Problem Description:
1. Over the last century, Israel and Palestine have been in a state of constant violence. One of the
most problematic issues in this conflict is Hamas’ extreme ways of fighting for its objectives. Hamas is a political movement that uses violence to be heard on their lack of resources as well as
other human rights and in 2006, they were elected to govern Palestinians. Israel responds to Hamas’ violence with military force ultimately prolonging the possibility of reaching a peaceful agreement. The Oslo agreement was supposed to end the violence, but this peace treaty failed for
numerous reasons, and violence erupted because a large population of grassroots Palestinians felt
unheard and neglected. The Beyond Intractability website states that in many cases extremists are people who have experienced poverty and lack of resources like healthcare, nutrition, education, and employment (Maiese & Burgess, 2003). In this particular problem, violence keeps erupting because many of these resources are held in control of the Israelis, and Palestinians believe that they need to fight to survive.
2. Hamas has been painted as a movement of terrorism, but many often ignore why it was supported in the first place. Palestinians were tired of living under dreadful conditions such as lack of water, food, and shelter which drove them to seek a different solution. When the Palestinians elected Hamas, many of them thought it would help them gain their rights back. The
corruption of the previous Palestinian government and unfair negotiations in the peace treaty played a major role in the support for a violent movement like Hamas to fight for their human rights. After the OSLO agreements, Palestinians were supposed to get 20 percent of the water, but they never got what they were promised. The lack of resources like water helps movements
like Hamas be supported by suffering community members. The control that Israel continues to have over the water supply today keeps Palestinians under their power and gets in the way of Palestinian’s agriculture affecting their food supply and especially their economy (Al Jazeera, 2018). Many that voted for Hamas the first time now feel different and regret voting in a movement that depends heavily on violent means to resolve problems, because many innocent people end up getting hurt in the process (Real Stories, 2017). 3. Violence tends to make things worse and Israel’s responses to violence with more violence keeps hurting innocent people in the process. Not only does Hamas use violence to get its point across, but Israel behaves the same way using its military to attack Palestinians. A recent documentary shows two children that died instantly and one severely injured after Israel’s plans to attack launch sites in Palestine were executed (Real Stories, 2017). In the beginning of Hamas'
election many Palestinians supported the violent behavior from Hamas, but now many see it as a threat to the community because they know that Israel will respond violently as well putting their
family members in danger as well as putting their community members in danger. Innocent civilians in Israel also get hurt in the process of Hamas acting violently with Israel. The fact that the Israel government withheld very important necessities from Palestinians after the OSLO agreement such as their tax revenues and closure of territories in the West Bank and Gaza, only made their lack of resources more scarce (Turner, 2006). As long as Palestinians lacks resources they will keep risking their lives and putting other’s lives at risk to keep fighting for their survival.
