Adobe Captivate Slide 2 - Introduction Text Captions: Introduction In Lesson 2 of this unit, we discussed ways that you could generate materials indicating the similarities and differences between the pair of topics you choose for the Comparative Essay due for this unit’s assignment. Now that you have that material, you need to develop a thesis statement and organize your essay by either point or subject so that you can begin writing. When writing a comparative essay, there are three ways to build a thesis statement: 1. A thesis based upon similarities 2. A thesis based upon differences 3. A thesis based upon similarities and differences Below in the presentation, you will find that each of these types of thesis statements is discussed in detail. Page 2 of 13
Adobe Captivate Slide 3 - Similarities Text Captions: A Thesis Based Upon Similarities... When writing a thesis based upon similarities, you want to focus on the comparisons between items—the points at which the two items overlap. If you do write a thesis based upon similarities, then your essay will focus on correspondences, rather than disparities, so (depending upon the organization you choose) your points will be made about the ways the two items are related only. Adobe Captivate Slide 4 - Similarities Example Text Captions: Similarities Example... EXAMPLE: Elegant Coffee and Coffee-2-Go are surprisingly similar restaurants because of their food choices, cold coffee beverages, and fast-food style efficiency. TEMPLATE: ___[Topic 1] ____ and ___[Topic 2]____ are similar because of ___[similarity 1]___, ___[similarity 2]___, and ___[similarity 3]__. In the example above, the three similarities provide the topics for body paragraphs. The thesis is that the fictional Elegant Coffee and the fictional Coffee-2-Go are similar, but a thesis should also include the “because” statement that follows with the three reasons. Adobe Captivate Slide 5 - Differences Text Captions: A Thesis Based Upon Differences... As oppossed to the thesis based upon similarities, the thesis based upon differences focuses on the ways in which two items are contrasting. In an essay with a thesis based upon differences, the likenesses are mostly ignored in favor of the ways that two topics are dissimilar. Differences Focused Page 5 of 13
