Defining Effective Curriculum for the Digital Generation MacKenzie Rooks Master of Science in Education, Walden University EDUC- 6602J-1 Nate Sparks June 8, 2023
In the video, Dr. Hayes defines curriculum as, “a series of learning experiences determined by teachers, students, or both”. She continues to say that the curriculum is not a textbook but is so much more. When I think about what curriculum means, I think about the students' needs, knowledge, and skill levels they must complete standards given by the state. Curriculum is not generic; this means that it is not meant for just one group but for a wide variety of students. Something that is very prevalent today is the digital age. When thinking of curriculum and how I can address the needs and preferences of my students I must keep the digital generation in mind. Jukes and Schaff wrote an article about the learning attributes of the digital generation. One attribute they wrote about was that digital learners prefer multitasking (Jukes & Schaff, 2019). They continue by saying that students can be doing three things at one time but still say they are “bored”. This is something that needs to be remembered when connecting curriculum to students' learning. As a teacher you want the students to be interested in what they are learning. Some ways to do this through digital form would be to find a song that goes with what you are discussing, watch an educational video, create an engaging slideshow, play educational games, or have a discussion board on google classroom. Digital learners process pictures, sounds, color, and video more than they do when reading a text given (Jukes & Schaff, 2019). Creating slideshows that are interactive and engaging is one way to reach your students' needs while teaching the curriculum. With electronics changing each day, it is important to keep up with what your students are interested in to keep them interested in learning in new and fun ways. When differentiating curriculum in the classroom it is important to remember that all students bring different gifts and challenges (Education Week, 2018). It is our job as educators to find these gifts and challenges and implement them into the curriculum based on each student's
