Part 1 – Mirrors Include word count for each summary and reflection. Book 1 Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn by Kenard Pak Grade Level Grade Level 1 Summary (25-50 words) A young girl takes her dog for a stroll to observe the changes from Summer to Autumn. She warmly greets everything she encounters and each item shares how it is adapting for the season. Afterward, she returns home. Eagerly welcomes Autumn the following day. Reflection (50-100 words) I really enjoy spending time with my dogs, which is why I feel a strong connection to this book. Exploring nature and witnessing the changes that occur year after year brings me joy and helps me relax. Whenever I'm outside I love encountering creatures, such as the cows and horses on my grandparent's farm where I spent my childhood. It's those moments that make being outdoors so special to me Book 2 Ruby Finds a Worry by Tom Percival Grade Level Grade Level K Summary (25-50 words) In the story "Ruby Finds a Worry " we are introduced to Ruby, a curious young girl. One day she comes across something, a Worry. Initially, it's a small concern but as time goes by it grows larger and starts to dominate her thoughts completely. Along the way, Ruby discovers that everyone experiences worries and finds solace in befriending a boy who shares his own experiences. Together they learn a method to overcome these worries. Reflection (50-100 words) Ruby Finds a Worry is a thought touching tale that serves as an excellent starting point for engaging with children, about emotional intelligence and shared personal worries. This topic is incredibly important because it helps children understand that while worries are common and everyone experiences them they can become overwhelming if not managed effectively. The story skillfully portrays concerns and childhood anxiety. Alongside moments of sadness Ruby also experiences joy, happiness and energy. As a result Rubys journey feels incredibly authentic. I hope readers will relate to this relatable character who validates their own emotions. Book 3 Roger, the Jolly Pirate by Brett Helquist Grade Level Grade Level K-2 Summary (25-50 words) Roger isn't well liked by the pirates so whenever something important happens they send him below deck. One day the ship comes under attack from enemies. In a turn of events Roger decides to whip up a cake but mistakenly ignites a cannon instead. The explosion covers him in flour giving him a ghost like appearance that terrifies the enemies and sends them fleeing. Surprisingly, this
unexpected show of bravery earns Roger acceptance from his pirates. Reflection (50-100 words) I've always had a knack, for standing out in a crowd. I was a bit quirky. Never quite fit in. That's why I could relate to the character. He didn't blend in with the others. Even though they tolerated him they would distance themselves when trying to appear tough. It reminded me of my experience growing up in high school, where I was considered the outsider among my friends.. As we grew older and entered high school things started to change for the better. Book 4 The Dot by Peter H Reynolds Grade Level Grade Level 1-3 Summary (25-50 words) Vashti isn't really a fan of her art class. She's afraid of failing and not meeting expectations. However, her teacher motivates her to start with something simple as a single dot. Reluctantly, she gives it a try. She declares that she is finished. Surprisingly her artwork gets displayed on the wall. This prompts Vashti to challenge herself to create a better dot next time. In the end she finds herself encouraging one of her classmates to embrace their potential. Reflection (50-100 words) I selected this book to reflect on myself because like others I also have fears of failure. Sometimes I find it challenging to express my creativity due to self- doubt. I remember an assignment in art class where we were asked to create a poster board featuring images that represented who we are. At first, I felt unsure about what to do because I didn't want to appear strange or misinterpret the assignment. However, my art teacher encouraged me to embrace myself and as a result I excelled in completing the task. B ook 5 Rainbowfish and the Big Blue Whale by Marcus Pfister Grade Level Grade Level 2 Summary (25-50 words) In the story "Rainbow Fish and the Big Blue Whale " a huge blue whale decides to settle near their reef. He misunderstands Rainbow Fish and his friends leading to hunger and unhappiness for all. To avert a catastrophe, Rainbow Fish must find a way to reconcile with the blue whale. This tale explores the depths of the ocean while emphasizing the importance of choosing our words when discussing others. It also highlights the bravery required to stay on the course. Reflection (50-100 words) This cute little tale contains valuable lessons that students can learn from when they finish reading this book. Not only does it emphasize the importance of not judging others based on appearances, but it also highlights the benefits of befriending those who are different from oneself. Children will be drawn to this book due, to its illustrations while also gaining an understanding of the significance of prioritizing their safety and recognizing and standing up against racial stereotypes so they can effectively intervene and defend others in such situations Part 2 – Windows Include word count for each summary and reflection.

Book 1 The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes Grade Level Grades: 3-5 Guided Reading Level: P Summary (25-50 words) Maddie and Peggy are these girls who are always teasing Wanda because she wears a dress to school every day. Maddie wants to be kind. She’s afraid that she'll become a target too. Eventually both of them decide to apologize to Wanda. As a gesture of goodwill Wanda gives them drawings of her dress that end up looking like Maddie and Peggy. They sincerely hope that Wanda has forgiven them. Reflection (50-100 words) I selected this book as a window because it highlights the nature of people's lives. It reminds us to treat others with kindness and empathy considering that we may not fully understand their circumstances. Wanda, unlike many of the girls, was financially disadvantaged. She couldn't afford fancy clothes. When she misses a day of school, it prompts the girls to feel remorseful and apologize for their previous behavior. It emphasizes the significance of acknowledging our mistakes and striving to make amends. Book 2 Counting Kindness by Hollis Kurman Grade Level Grade Level 2 Summary (25-50 words) This book is absolutely charming! It tells the heartwarming story of a refugee family embarking on a journey to find a life emphasizing the importance of kindness in helping them establish a new home and family. It not only educates students about the experiences of refugees but also encourages them to find solace and support when faced with challenges in their own lives. Reflection (50-100 words) Counting Kindness tells the tale of a family fleeing from a dangerous place. The illustrations vividly portray the risks they face along their journey. They are taken to safety on a larger boat. What I really loved was how the bird accompanies them throughout the story providing comfort and reminding us that refugees are not alone. This book is not only great for teaching counting skills but also for introducing concepts like the days of the week. It's especially helpful for refugee children who may be starting at a school as it shows them that they can make friends even in challenging situations. The inclusion of kids playing football highlights the importance of treating everyone with respect regardless of their background or experiences. The book ends with a thought provoking question; "How ways can you think of to be kind?" I find this ending wonderful. It would be a teaching tool to introduce at the beginning of a school year particularly when there is a refugee or asylum seeking child joining the class. It opens up discussions about what it means to seek asylum and emphasizes the value of kindness. This story made me realize that no matter where we're where we go our lives can still have elements of normalcy and familiarity. Book 3 Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson Grade Level Grade Level K-2 Summary (25-50 words) Maya is a student who faces bullying due to her choice of clothing. Chloe happens to be the instigator behind the bullying but eventually she becomes aware of how unkind she has been towards Maya. Unfortunately Maya stops
attending school. Her family decides to move. Chloe deeply regrets not having the opportunity to show apologize and feels saddened by the outcome. Reflection (50-100 words) This is another story about bullying and the importance of not judging others. When a person is being bullied at school, they often believe that the bully will never realize how hurtful their actions are. Unfortunately, it seems that bullies often come to this realization when it's already too late which should not be the case. Bullying is a behavior that must be stopped whenever witnessed. Nobody should engage in bullying because they would certainly feel terrible if someone treated them in that way. Book 4 Not So Different by Cyana Riley Grade Level Grade Level 2 Summary (25-50 words) This story promotes the idea that students should embrace their qualities, such as skin color, hair and more. It encourages celebrating the backgrounds and experiences found within the classroom. Reflection (50-100 words) I can imagine how challenging it must be for students from backgrounds to face a classroom where their peers may not resemble them. This narrative resonates with any student who believes that their unique qualities somehow make them inferior to others and to help them realize that it isn’t true. It also inspires readers to embrace and celebrate those differences. Book 5 Big Cat Little Cat by Elisha Cooper Grade Level (50-100 words) Grade Level K-1 Summary (25-50 words) Once upon a time, there was a cat who found companionship when a new feline arrived. The older cats took it upon themselves to teach the one all the essential skills for survival. They became inseparable, sharing every moment together. However, as time went on the elder cat grew old. Eventually, the cat went away, never to return. Reflection This shows that you can always find friends wherever you go. It also shows that you can always learn from your elders. It is important to have a role model or mentor in life to help guide you through the challenges you face in life. 10 A: I think so. The books you chose have a little bit of everything in it. The stories seem to provide solid lessons that would be able to be understood by a student. Q: Do you think it is important for students to see things in a different light towards people? A: It is really important! Some kids will never grow up having to worry where their next meal is coming from. They will never know that struggle like others have. Having books that could help you see into the life of other people could really help them be more understanding. Mirrors Interview: Q: Did you see yourself in any of my mirrors? Do you think that my experiences could be relatable to others? A: For some of your mirrors I saw myself. I really related to when you talked about the book with the dog and the girl who walked her a lot (Goodbye Summer Hello Autumn). I definitely think that the books that you chose could be relatable for other people who read the books. Q: Do you think it is important for kids to read books that mirror themselves? A: I do. Books that mirror yourself can help you learn more about yourself. Also, it is fun to relate to books. It helps you get more into the story. Class Reading List Interview: Q: Do you think it is important to have a wide variety of books in your classroom book list?
A: It is. Having a large selection of books is nice because there will be a book for everyone. One book will really stick with one kid while another will really stick with someone else. Q: Do you think that kids can learn something from the books that I have provided? A: Definitely! You selected books that have a good story and that are fun and exciting, but also have some sort of message. That is super important for a student to have. When you start learning all of these valuable lessons at a young age, it makes growing up easier. Insight Gained From this Project During this project, I struggled to find books that I thought would fit the specific categories. I was not extremely confident with my selections. During my interview, hearing that I had selected solid books that would genuinely help benefit a child made me feel better. I grew some confidence with that. I think it is very important to include books that benefit multiple different groups of kids in your classroom. You never know the struggles that some children are going through, so having a book that they can relate to might really benefit them. I enjoyed this assignment because I was able to learn about new books, but I was also able to remember old books that I have long forgotten about. I am glad to have strengthened the skills of what books I should choose when reading to my class In the future. It was also nice being able to do this interview with my mom, who was a former teacher. It started conversation on the side of different books that she would read to me as a child. Overall, I really enjoyed this project. Word count: (186)
